actally i think its is possible to gauge a "best" drumstick, if u were to compare say a zildjian hickory 5a to to a vater hickory 5a, same wood, same specs, different brand... however in this case there is very little factors for determining the best and those factors are usually quite irrelevant when it comes to playability (except maybe quality/source of wood)... such not so important factors are maybe value? durability? worksmanship?

If you think along the lines of brand, in terms of quality and durability i think that zildjian sticks are the worst. they break too easily and the wood structure is not compact at all. they end up lighter than they're supposed to be. not very good QC.
i think vater is giving the rest of the companies a run for their money. my last pair of vater sticks haven't even gotten frayed yet. and it's 5 months old.

Yeah its true zildjian sticks are the worst, it break super easily, i think they made the wood really dry. My bro bought me a pair of those Chambers sticks, after afew weeks, it din really chip off, the whole stick just broke into half, the grains really suck.
From years of heavy playing, i think PRO MARK sticks are really good, they last me the longest. The feel of the stick is really good and when u play u noe its not gonna let u down in a middle of a gig even if the middle part of the sticks looks like its been eaten like a corn from all that rim shots.
Ahead sticks are really good too but i finally broke my baby after 5 years during a gig, rest in pieces babes. I think ahead sticks are great investments, especially if ur constantly breaking sticks. Just got a new pair...

In fact, alot of companies are beginning to do that...there is vic firth's bolero sticks. They're real fat and chunky, but really light. Then there're maple sticks which is even shorter in lifespan...but they're extremely light and soft.
I personally use vaters now but that doesn't make them any better than the rest....I just happen to like the feel....
The things that make sticks bad are: bad pairing by the manufacturers resulting in unbalanced weight and of course, the worse factor:-warping of sticks.....

its all about preference. on all the drumsites i've been too, they always argue about whats the best stick and cymbal... IMO there is none.
its all down to the user's preference.
Btw go screw the guy that did the QC on pro.mark I bought a pair of pro.mark 5A sticks, broke in like 15mins of play... really wasted my money..
Right now i'm using 7A lazers sticks, i think they're pretty well balanced, and they're cheap. The best part is that they last quite a while. The thing to do is ask the person at the counter if there's a "buy in bulk" discount.
Most of them give a discount if you buy 10 pairs. That works out to be $60. that $60 is gona last you a year.

I am not sure if my best drumstick is the best for everyone, since each of us have our own preferences.
But after using Zildjian sticks for close to 7 years, the standard and the signature models. I knew it was a time for a change. The sticks just keeps breaking, sometimes in just two to three jam sessions.
After going through Vater, Vic Firth and Pro Mark... it was Carter Beaufords American Hickory signature series Pro Mark 5 AB was the best feel. It had the suitable lenght based on how I like to set the distance of my kit, it had the weight of 5B for that fat sound but also the lightness of 5A to do blasts...its kinda the best of both...i felt 5A was too light and 5B was too heavy. Durabilty wise..the sticks last me usually around 4 to 6 months...which is really great....it feels confortable in my arms for the heavy fast music I play...
I must say I am satisfied by it. I did try Neil Pearts Pro Mark Japanese Oak signature...and broke it the first day. Even after all the heavy rim-shots and marathon cymbal crashes the 5 AB sticks last for me man...theyre priced reasonably well...i just dont have the cash to for out 35 ringgit per month on sticks.I never broke a Carter Beuford less then 4 months.
I can say that Pro Marks 5AB hickory is the best for me fo my body size, music styles and budget.....i cant comment much about Vater and Vic Firth and I would like to give it a try if theres any recommendations,

EHH... how come nobody mention abt LA Special stick??? Although its a cheap stick but its actually from Pro Mark's company.

Hi, for me I am currently using "3 sticks" by dw.. and it comes in 3 rather than the usual 2. Hence, if you buy 2 sets, it will be like gettin' 3 pairs of drumstix. Really balanced and comfortable for me and it last..
