Dear all,

What do u think is a good compressor for bass?

Aphex Punch Factory

EH White Finger

EH Black Finger

Boss Compressor/Sustainer

Behringer Compressor/Sustainer

=)

Haha. Neither of the above.
I'll personally for a decent tube compressor.
Pedal compressors don't give me the flexibility I need.

if you want it transparent, get the keeley compressor. if you want it warm, get the ehx white/blackfinger. have tried both and recommend both very strongly :)

Keeley's about USD245 including shipping to Singapore.

I got my White Finger for about SGD200 second-hand, so near around $270-300 new? Black finger's gonna be more than that, seeing as to how it's a tube-based compressor.

i read somewhere that a compressor is the most important gear for a bassist. what does it actually do? i thought a compressor was a limiter enhancer? or is it not?

Pedal Compressors are good for those people who don't want to go deeply into technical issues. Proper usuage of the compressor is best left to the sound engineers.

Bass is a "scary" instrument especially with the rumblings of the low frequencies.
These "leftover" frequncies are annoying, not accounting for the room's accoustics which can turn into a nightmare...
Using a compressor to balance the overall sound of the bass can tighten the sound
and it is said that a slightly "off beat" kick by the drummer can be corrected by making the bass sound like the "Kick" drum through EQ and proper compression to cover up the mistake. I have never seen anyone resorting to the above method.
