Being too dependant on your Double Pedals good?

I'm not sure if there's a buried thread on this topic but I tried searching, no luck though.

So hey all, I'm just wondering,

Is it a good practice to be dependant on your DPs?
I mean as in like, you use too much of it, even in terribly easy songs where you can easily pull off with a single pedal.

Can i say that it's good because I am putting my left foot in use as well, so I am "training it" more and making it more seasoned?
Or can I say it's bad because I am restricting the learning and exposure of my right foot as a single pedalist? Cos I think my right foot is a erm, faster learner than the left. O_O

I'm confused.
But I would admit that I actually play more accurately with the DPs, for both easy and not so easy songs. Though I'm aware that some songs are easier to play on singles.

Your say please fellow drummers. :)

that's like saying..being too dependent on your drumsticks. double pedals are drum hardware..you use them as you would use a single pedal and your drumsticks, only for different functions.

Hey GirlPants,

I think your question is very valid. First of there is absolutely nothing wrong with practicing any groove with a double pedal. The question however is what you want to achieve out of practicing a particular groove with the double pedal....because of sound? Feel? or like you said, to help get the left foot a little more agile.

Having said the above, there are some grooves that do require a double pedal to pull off. So, if you are practicing those grooves, then it is self-explanatory.

Another thought:- Would you want to be able to play all tunes with double pedals only? Have you thought about how inconvenient it would be if you are to play in a studio or club that has only single pedals setup? Also, if you listen deeper, for the same given groove, it sounds and feels different when played with a single and double pedal....when you can hear that difference, you might be able to make a clearer decision.

thanks for posting the question, girlpants!
i was wondering about the same thing.

and thanks for the answer, alvinthedrummer!

Thanks for the answers!

But yeah Alvin, that's why I try to learn both the single and DPs version of a song. Incase the jamming studio I go to only have the singles. LOL.

Another reason I suppose is that my right hand(hi hat hand) seems to be following the beat of my right foot!! Not all the time though, but it's freaking irritating. My right handjust can't have a mind of its own.....:(

Well, maybe my reason for being too dependant on the DPs is cos I feel more comfortable with it knowing that I will make less mistakes.

So what's your reason Jughead? LOL.

No Worries!

Your issue with your right hand can be fixed with some patience. All psychomotor issues need to be fixed slowly. When learning something new, your body needs time to adjust to the signal being sent from your brain....it is strongly suggested that you practice all the problem (coordination problems) grooves at an extremely slow speed over a significant amount of time....when its slow, it gives your limbs enough time to realize the visualization you have in your mind.

Try funk beats girlpants! That forces your limbs to become more independent much quicker. vary the hihat choking, ghost notes, and bass drum beats while keeping the backbeat.

Hmm, i think trashing up a song is much easier than funk beats. LOL. I like!

Anyways, thanks for the answers. And I'll sure to look for some funk beats and practice practice and practice. :)
