Beginner's dilemma

Yamaha's about 500 top. Think I'll go with sx for now. It's pretty decent? Because I'm sure those extras don't add up to 300 dollars. Wgere to get ex?

imho, try to avoid starter packs that comes in boxes. these guitars tend to have low qc and you might end up with a piece that's not worth the money.

i'm not sure about basses, but for guitars, i usually recommend craftsman from citymusic. i did a bit of web surfing and found this bass, which you might be interested: http://www.citymusic.com.sg/webshaper/store/viewProd.asp?pkProductItem=359

all budget guitars have lower qc compared to their more expensive counter parts, so it's very important to actually test a few extensively to check for any defacts before putting down your money for it. from my experience, craftsman electrics are more worth the money than sx and squire. do consider them!

i think citymusic has this "starter package" deals too, but it's kinda like a mix and match thing so you can pick from a range of guitars / basses and amps and they'll just give you a bigger discount on that.

edit: oh the part about bass amp. don't scrimp too much on it. your amp give you losuy tone, you won't feel inspired to practise / carry on playing as much as compared to if an amp gives you shiok tone. aim for amps with at least a 8" driver for bass. ie the speaker size is 8" and above, but a 10" is recommended

If you do decide on getting the "starter pack" from CityMusic, I highly suggest you consider to get the Line 6 LowDown Studio 110 amp model. The LD15 is not too bad, but I kept getting crackling sounds (maybe it's just my luck). I gave away that amp and got the Studio 110 instead.

It's more than enough for home practice, and if you ever need to bring it out for a small gig, it'll be able to pump out the bass nicely. If it's still not enough, you can plug the amp straight to the mixer via midi/mic cable or the standard cable. I love flexibility. ;)

either brand, sx or squier is fine. But just test the bass out, cause no 2 basses sound the same. ive played some nicer SXs than squiers and vice versa

The sx and craftsman have very tempting prices, while the squier has best looks IMO. I need more advice on craftsman!

Ah, I had the same problems last year, trying to find nice bass and amp! And I didn't know about this site! Dang.

Anyway, I got a nice Yamaha RBX 374 and an Orange bass amp (small one). Total was just over $900. A 'package' set from Yamaha was around $700, so I figured another $200 for a better instrument and amp were worth it.

They both work nicely together. The Yamaha has a pickup that needs a 9-volt battery (which I think dies quicker if you leave the guitar cable jacked in - like for pedals).

I don't know much more since I'm a newb, but my setup sounds nice, handles well.

like i said, it depends on the bass itself. Different basses have different sound quality. IMO the quality of all of them are about the same

These are the lists of starter packs, i have excluded misc items like tuner, strap, cable, etc. SX: SX Ursa 1 Bass Guitar ( 3/4 scale ) BA-1565 15 Watt Bass Amp Price- $119, dirty cheap!
