Be Honest

hmm... screaming in songs...
i listen to those type of music most of the time...
kalmah, CoB, Norther, etc...
eventhough i dun understand the screams, those type of music are the best. coz, if u ignore the screams, the music is totally awesome. the screams are juzz like an addition to the music.

abt ruining metal, i think its a matter of perspective.

eh. ok. sure. no prob.
i just prefer the song without screaming.
just wonder why they add sceams into it.
dats all.
not getting anyone wrong.

cheers.

if you're talking abt growling, I think Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy has a very awesome growl. Thicker and more aggressive than most guys.

Which is why I think the newer inflames stuff is better

incase you didnt know, he is the vocals for AA and IF

If u scream, scream in tune and scream in a way the audience can understand wat u are screaming about, after all a song is about getting a message across..so the audience has to understand wat the heck u are screaming about..

something like that.
haha.
but i'm really glad to hear so many views abt this.
at least we get to understand one another's music better.

haha.thanks doods.

cheers \m/

I think the question is WHY people scream in songs and not HOW they scream, how it fits, etc. Let's not talk about songs with singing and screaming as well, those apparently utilise screaming for emphasis. Songs that have screaming throughout the whole song, why do they do it? Is it because it is easier to scream than to sing normally? Or is it cool? Or is it angst? Or just because they can? What is it? I think that is what somebody was trying to find out. From a person that sings normally, I sing normally because it sounds pleasant, and it's a challenge to sing in tune, and reach certain notes. It is also very musical. What about those who scream? Why do you guys scream?

no man bro!!!!! dun get me wrong! im not saying u... but some fucckers who goes 'yurks... punkrock' u noe? its okay if u say u dun like.. but dun fucck them upside down man.....!!!!!!! bro!!!!!!! dun get me wrong! :D

+1

i dun diss punkrock as a genre but i dun like some punk bands.i started out playing punk(stil do at times) so its kind of dissing myself. as a matter of genre, i play/listen according to my mood. emotional=emo, classical music/jazz=studiying/relaxing and blahblah.. and as to why people scream, maybe its just to inject some emotions into the songs. for example, emocore/post hardcore bands like finch. they scream to convey the anger that they feel an err.. i don't know how to put it to words :? my two cents

hahah i see i see.

yea i guess its a way to EMPOWER the song.
but i would prefer to bring out anger throught a guitar solo or a drum solo.
bass with distort would be hella awesome.

hahah.

Well , for me screaming should be "built up" in the first place.

There should be some build up first in the vocals before the vocalist actually goes into screaming mode...

If a vocalist suddenly were to scream without this "build up" , then I think it would be redandunt...

I do enjoy sceaming in rock music , but a vocalist should know when to scream and when not to...

screaming is really good when u can do it properly, but some people scream untill i dunno what the lyrics is,the whole thing is so absurd and destroying the music,so if you cant scream, dun scream, hahaha,no offense guys

actually i find the whole screaming/growling/goring thing more like a work of art, no matter how ridiculous it might seem to others. Some bands like Isis use their screaming vocals to act as an additional instrument and it sounds really good, really blends in with the music, their trick was to lower his volume so his screaming wont drown out the music.

bands like Cannibal Corpse who play with drop tuning tend to go for the really deep and low gore. Now firstly it might sound freaky to some people and a major turn off to the others but have you realised how difficult it is to cultivate the ability to scream or gore? im sure not everyone here can do it even if you tried, its just like a guitarist being asked to play a malmsteen solo, only some can pull it off, the rest still must practise like hell, its the same case here, its all about how you do it. And i feel for most metal bands, it really works.

that being said, I have come across 'growling' which sounds too much like a drunken rant. Like Arch Enemy's ex vocalist. It's more hilarious than aggressive. I also have a strong distaste for CoB's growling.
To be fair, there's excellent growling too...like Angela Gossow.

dude, two songs to check out. they're different in terms of sound (one's much easier to listen to if you're a more mainstream music kinda guy) but they both employ screaming. these are totally two of my favourite songs to listen to.

1. Taking Back Sunday - Ghost Man On Third
2. As I Lay Dying - 94 Hours

it took me a long time to learn to appreciate screaming and i still don't like it that much in general, but i realized that i think screaming expresses a very raw form of emotion that singing can't bring across. singing is very controlled and moderated because singing is a difficult skill to master. screaming is kinda like a vocal release of pure unbridled emotion. it could be anger, passion, despair, joy, hope; screaming straddles the entire range of emotions. sometimes when people are overwhelmed with emotion they feel the urge to scream. it's sort of like a way of releasing and expressing emotion that singing can't quite do accurately.

that's my take on it.

some bands growl a lot though. i think that's ridiculous. it's like listening to a 3 foot garden gnome in a little green hat trying to sound fierce.
