BC Rich: NT Warbeast

there's no such thing as 'better'; it's all too subjective & personal. the default pickups in this guitar are decent but could have been better. however, it might be 'fantastic' to some of us, it's about hearing it in action & liking/ disliking it in person.

active pickups are battery operated, the inclusive pre-amp pretty much overpowers whatever body wood character there is to hear. this isn't 'bad' of course, especially for players who favour intense distortion, the EMGs (or other equivalent active units) are recommended.

it's what works for the individual. Marduk's Morgan Harkansson plays a Fender Strat- a proof that any guitar would cut it if you intend it to:

Hmmm... a Strat can still qualify as being "rock/metal" enough to me... if Hakansson was to use a Telecaster or those old Epiphone Casino-like guitars, that just doesn't cut it... ;) (It's pretty cool though that the Fender Strat Hakansson used has that H-S-S combi instead of the more common S-S-S combination)

Nevertheless I think we cannot deny that guitars like Warbeast contribute a lot to the image of an aggressive metal band. Any Hail Satan guitarist can use a non-metal looking guitar in studio to get whatever sound they like but for him to pose with such guitar during promo shoot, it takes the brutality out of the image.

So if anyone who praises and wants buy a Warbeast just on its merits of being cool and brutal, and if image is what that someone is looking for afterall, I guess Warbeast would be a good buy.

IMHO

i'm using a tele for BM stuff... i should stop because it doesn't cut it for me, yes?

I simply can't imagine playing metal with singlecoils, and succeeding in getting a powerful tone. The most powerful Iron Maiden tones I've heard were used with humbuckers. Of course a strat can do anything. Its one of the few designs I can imagine seeing in all genres, but for metal, only HSS or even HH does it.

it's not about the single coil competency, it's about being practical- can the single coil comprehensively avoid the high gain/ drive induced hum?

my Hot Rails pictured above handle majority of the riffing, i switch to the neck single coil for solos.

Aiyoh, the issue is about whether the Warbeast fits a brutal image. Admittedly your review of Warbeast is very holistic indeed but since there are some people here who commented about how fierce-looking the guitar is, therefore based on that context alone, ie. image, the Warbeast deserves its credit.

But still... if you can get a superpower black metal sound with a single-coil Telecaster, then you have indeed achieved greatness. However, if you perform that Telecaster, with spikes, blood and corpse-paint, etc. I don't think that guitar fits the aggressive image of the music...

Its harder to obtain a death metal tone with a tele, black metal its a bit easier... I used to play black metal on my Ibanez's singlecoil and it sounded quite okay, though of course very weak.

the Warbeast deserves to be the propeller of visual aesthetics, no issues about that.

there are people who get the job done using alternative tools; if it's a means to an end, it's justified- regardless of the means. the occupation of whatever looks right becomes primary on the context of visual impact, there are some of us who deem this secondary.

it's about what comes out of your speaker- if it suits your intention, then it remains suitable, regardless of the implements.
