Bass Effect

Well getting a bass effect? Me i've got one it's ZOOM605. Nothin much to say as for it is quite a straight forward manual control.

Maybe there's more out there need to check if you r not sure of it.

anything i need to take note on buy a bass effect? heard from my friend that Korg not bad? hmmm..[/b]

the essential bass effects for me are overdrive, equaliser, chorus and the most important-a preamp/DI.

Personally i feel that a bassist should get his sound out raw .. unless you are looking to do solo bass stuff then don't really bother much about effects cos they won't do much to affect your sound drastically. If you are looking for a bit more dirt in your sound .. you can try looking around for effects .. like Exciters, Reverb .. other than that don't bother cos if you play stuff like punk, rock, metal .. there's so much noise that your bass can't really be heard distinct, .. the only person appreciating your effects would be yourself.

If you have an preamp install on your bass ... personally i feel that your preamp would be good enough to mod your sound and gain that tone control you are looking for. Effects no point lah .. especially external graphic equalizers .. don't bother getting them cos if you go through EQ after EQ .. you'll die trying to get your sound right cos you have so many channels to adjust .. on your bass .. on your amp .. on the PA system and on your EQ pedal .. sure die one lah ...

If you have a passive bass ... getting an external EQ will help you to gain more control over your tone. I would recommend the boss GB7 .. i've never used it before but .. it's BOSS ... so next time you wanna get effects .. ask yourself .. what do you need it for?? ..

I used to own a Korg AX10B .. (i think) .. the main effects i used were reverb ONLY .. i was more towards the amp modelling part .. but that didn't really help cos i had so much EQ to adjust .. nearly killed myself ..

Peace out

if you installed a preamp into your bass then it would become an active bass right?

actually for me, i wouldnt install any preamp INTO my bass. cos its pretty ex and if i sell my bass, it would mean that i have to remove the preamp and it leaves the bass with unsightly holes and stuff.

you can put it that way ... if your electronics requires a battery to run .. most probably it's an active preamp. Active preamps usually come with an onboard EQ .. most of the time you choose between a bass/treble control with a blend and volume control .. or a 3-band EQ with bass/mid/treble controls. Some manufacturers have a mid-frequency select switch or a variable mid-freq sweep, e.g. Bartolini, Aguilar .. Ibanez stock preamp on BTB series basses.

Actually if you want you can find a preamp that fits the number of holes on your bass now. For example if your bass has only 3 holes drilled for the potentiometers .. you can install a 2-band EQ with a volume control, blend control for the pickups and a concentric bass/treble control like my current bass.

There are direct replacement for fender preamps also .. called J Retro and U retro .. you can take a look .. www.bestbassgear.com carries them but they are one heck of a bomb in price but alot of people testify on its sweet tone and control.

More controls doesn't mean a better sounding bass .. sometimes too many controls can mess up the sound of your bass if you dunno how to use it .. that's why for me .. the most i'll go is for a 3-band EQ .. but for now i'm very much satisfied with a 2-band one. So think of your needs .. not just because you want to tell people you have a "4-band EQ with a pickup selectors and coil switching and also a bright and deep swtich blah blah blah .. " no point cos you dunno how to use also right?

Was considering getting the Marcus J-retro but after looking at the amount of control on that thing... I'll stick to my passive mode man! too nuts for me, and I already have an outboard preamp anyway.

BTW you can also try www.bassnw.com for stuff.

In other news I whacked my thumb too hard and it missed the string and hit my pickup cover instead. started bleeding inside but the skin didn't break so I can't play/slap/type very well right now :(

yeah i think i'll stick with my passive stuff. its too much hoo-hah-bing-bang-boom knowledge. haha.

so if you have the blend control, it means that you cant control each of the individual pickups right? like, say you're using a jazz bass, then you cant control the neck and bridge pickup individually right?

MAN! although its not that gross, it sounds super-gross! im sorry bout your bad injury brudder, you'll have to play punk rock now, which really doesnt require much slapping. haha.

one advise from me dude =)

if you wanna get an effect...i advise you to get bigger amp,coz if u use the small amp....the sound wont come out [hope you'll understand this sentence...haha]
but if you have big budget, you better get a head and cabinet, useful for gigs [if you gig constantly] cheers bro

to paraphrase:

it's like buying a maserati and filling it with unleaded 95 from the SPC station across the road.

You can .. blend means how much of the pickup you want to hear .. it's almost the same as having two individual pickup control. Doesn't really make a difference IMO.

J-Retro don't think have Marcus Miller one .. designed by John East though. Anyway i wouldn't want to get it also .. crazy controls .. but Bong recommended me this preamp .. so .. i'll consider if i have a jazz bass .. i mean .. a real one .. okay .. my Warmoth is a jazz bass but my control cavity is at the back.

Ouch! Man .. that must have hurt real bad .. anyway .. i'm working on a solo line now .. with slap stuff inside .. will post it up once i get my recording done and my arrangement out .. any ideas where to get a free online drum machine?

What do you guys think about multi efx? I'm considering something from boss. I'm just afraid I might not use it to my moneys worth.

If you are looking for individual effects it would be better for you to get single effects. If you are looking for a range of effects then maybe a multi-EFX would be good. Some multi-processors have drum machines inside .. blah blah blah .. so you get a good range of processors .. but you have to keep an eye out.. cos sometimes you can't pair effects with another effects .. that's where single effects win over multi ones ..
