bass amplification/preamp questions

Actually the reason I asked was more out of interest rather than for practical reasons - I don't think I could afford a rackmount anytime soon, though I know people who actually use rackmounts for live sound - they just get that hardcase protection for it.

Anyhow, back to my question:

Is a rack mount preamp is like a preamp pedal? As in, can it be plugged straight into a head/combo and help shape the tone? Since there's no poweramp section, there's no issue with the power compatibility is there?

Yes, it has a 1/4" line output, no power compatibility issues, but you still need a power source for it. Depending on the kind of rack mount you're getting, it still "Alters/Shapes" your tone.
