Hi guys,

Anyone like to share their preference of this 2 brands of pickup.

I only tried a active EMG.. havent touch a bartolini. tonewood and other stuff affect the bass sound but any one got comments of these pickups?

Just in case people wanna upgrade their pickups.

What is the differences in the tones and character of sound produce?

Cheers,

Ben

I've never tried EMGs in a bass before (only the 81s and 85s in a guitar) but I've tried Barts... they're very smooth, so if you're looking for a sound that sits well in a mix and doesn't call attention to itself, that's where you should be looking. I've found that they sound better when run straight to the amp, rather than going through racks of equipment or pedals or whatever... it's a very refined sound.

I'm currently using EMGs on my bass, J/P/J setup, but without any preamp....just running the built-in preamp of the pickups.

The controls are wired vol, vol, vol, master tone. The sound is very clear, very present in the mix. Notes are very articulate and punchy, with big, tight lows and low mids, while highs are clear and great for slapping.

Overall, they're pretty decent pickups, but I must say that they lack the transparency that superkicky described of Barts. With EMGs, I find that there is no way I can sit in the mix without standing out.

Might swap out to Barts when I have cash, but I don't think my control cavity has enough space for a preamp! :?

I struggle with internal preamps, external preamps are like alien technology to me!

Personally prefer onboard preamps, especially those with mid controls. I find that most outboard preamps only allow for shaping of bass and treble....I'm a mids man, you see.

Just found out from Janice that Davis doesn't bring in Barts anymore.....in fact, she said nobody does! :(

you can try john east's J-Retro preamp, which is an onboard preamp specifically made to fit the J bass cavity. Think Melvin (fretless6) was selling
one at $450.

the aguilar obp-1 and the bart preamp are the super small onboard preamps i can think of. but i don't think they have any mids control.

The Bart preamp in the Lakland has a dip switch for toggling the midrange freq... 3-way I think, but I can't remember the frequencies off the top of my head.

Ok... gotta stop skivving at work :(

Order a Lakland! They come with Barts!
i thought lakland uses their own pickups now???
i think they use aeros or fralins for the jazz basses
the mm ones come with their in house pickups now

Nope, as far as i know, warwicks come with MEC or SD Basslines. But man, i love the tone of my barts, smooth as silk, and sits near perfectly in the mix.

Would love to own a warwick one of these days though, but must find one with a neck that won't go nuts on me.

I tried Barts on Pedullas before ... VERY SMOOTH TONE ... i was pleasantly surprised with the tone. Haven't tried EMGs though ... i heard why Davis didn't want to bring in Barts anymore ... it was a very expensive story for them ... Someone should really start to bring in Barts into singapore ...

could try suggesting to the ppl at g77. they seem to be bringing in alot of new stuff lately so they might be open to suggestions.

good idea... we should really speak up and get g77 to branch into BASS77 or something... like, have 30+% of the shop space dedicated to bass, bass and more bass...

i'm not sure about the new shop but i'm pretty sure about 30% of the old shop consisted of basses.

just need them to bring in the bass equivalent of bare knuckle pickups. wah gas man if they bring in lindy fralin, barts, nordstrands and bill lawrences. a couple of laklands wouldn't hurt either :P
