Hello fellow softies,

was thinking of replacing the pups on my Les Pauls.. was reading the bareknuckle pups online and alot of good reviews..problem is there's so many models out there im a bit lost. Anyone on Bare knuckles? Looking for something that is good with high gain pedals and heavy distortion..

Is there a reason why bare knuckles specifically?

Whats in your current guitar now and what do you not like about it? :D

Which Les Paul?

I think the popular Seymour Duncan pickups should do the trick unless you're really looking for something specific in the Bareknuckles.

They don't come cheap too right?

IMO bareknuckle is a very unique pickup.
Warpig and nailbomb is good for distortion/overdrive.
Go and listen to their sample on youtube and you will be surprise.

Aftermath and Painkiller! Painkiller is slightly more trebly than Aftermath; but both pickups has mids really pumped in, so you can get good clarity with distortion. IMHO, just change the bridge if you are not willing to spend too much on them, as a set new cost like $400+ (covered pickups). Uncovered are 1/6 cheaper though.

Only go for bare knuckles if you are looking for a specific type of sound, most of the hotter BK pups are generally suited for down tuned guitars. However, if you are playing in standard, you really have to careful cause it can sound a bit sharp. I myself use a pair of Aftermath BK pups, I was kinda shocked at first how bright it sounded on my Les Paul Studio but after a little tweaking (as you do with most gear) I got the sound I was looking for.

Also, a word of advice, I've been in your shoes once. "Looking for something that is good with high gain pedals and heavy distortion.." Heavy tone does not equals to high gain. If you're gonna turn up tons of gain then you won't hear the actual tone of your guitar & pups. Defeats the purpose of changing pups if you think about it.

Going back to the topic on pups, I suggest you look at seymour duncan pups. IMO they have a wide range of pups targeted towards to metal genre & each of them have their own unique quality to them. Here's a video link video of Keith Merrow demo-ing some of them, take your pick and hopefully you get what you're looking for. GOOD LUCK!

i'm using a set of calibrated mules on my LP standard.
Good classic tone with good dynamics.

i did not have treble issues with my set. It replaced my stock gisbon pups. no complaints. majority of tone is attributed to the amp so choose wisely. When i look for a pickup, i look more into the transparency and dynamics. tone can always be tweaked to an extent :)

it really depends on what you are looking for. Seymour Duncan have some good pups for a decent price if the BKP's cost too much.

That being said, duncans be able to work well with ur high gain pedals. Check out their models like JB, distortion, etc. You be surprised ;-)
