Hi guys,

another thing on my hand here! really need ur help!

PROBLEM

ive been playing in my band as a lead and rhythm guitarist for awhile aready! ( 3yrs+)

we've had countless ups and down including many misunderstandings and resolved them somehow! ( Geez ... im surprised)

ive wanted to leave like dunno how many bloody times! but because we've been not only a band, but also like a "band of brothers", i somehow gave in and stayed with them after pursuasion frm them! and also sinced we've built up the bond amongst us all!

as i was financially unstable, i din hv mch to do as for my guitar gear, and hv been making do wif wat i got till now! ive been playing since 14!

but because of not hving a band back then, i din play for a while and rusted like F**K! ive picked up in the past few yrs again! but because of the infrequent jamming nowadays and theres alot of times im left in the dark, i feel like F**King them in the face and leaving!

MAJOR PROBLEM

as my playing progresses now, ive saved up enough to buy better effects and even upgrading my pickups to the higher end ones! (but hv not done it yet)
as time passes and like all the time, i want to hv my part in a song to display my freedom of freeplay soloing!. i see myself as more of a soloist! i can be in a band but i want my freedom of expression as in i want my voice to be in my guitar! don every lead guitarist feel dat way?????????? and in tis band, im not given dat freedom!

my style of playing is by FREEPLAYING or FREE JAM as some mite call it. as in it all comes down to and from pure inspiraion. of course technique is applied

am i wrong to hv such a feeling? am i wrong in any way?

im in such a dillema! i dunno wat to say or do!

ive been making do all tis while wif a:-
Samick JR550 (Exact model as a Jackson RR V model) plan to change Neck pups to "Super 2" and Bridge to "X2N")

Morley Pro Series 2 Wah

Jackhammer JH-1

Boss Super Chorus CH-1

Marshall G15R (45 watts)

Effects i plan to get:-

Boss Ge-7 equaliser
Cry baby Wah (still considering)
DigiTech DigiDelay
Boss Phaser Ph-3 or 5 (still considering)

i knw tis is a long plea of help! but actually theres more! i don wanna bore y'al! i really need ur help! if u hv the time and patience to read tis far, i hope u can help me!

Really Appreciate it alot!
Thanx!
Cheers!

1. You want to retain band skills, you gotta be in a band. Simple as that. playing with a metronome does not guarantee you will click with any drummer or bassist.

You want to solve the problem in the band, sit down, set goals and objectives, and see that everyone agrees. If not, find a solution - quit, change, accomodate.

2. If you want to be a soloist, then you either 1) steer your band in that direction 2) form/join a band that plays that way 3) quit and form your own band.

3. You list your equipment, but your equipment doesn't matter. You definitely don't need more equipment to enable you to free jam/solo - a simple distortion pedal with a guitar and an amp can take you extremely far.

every musician would feel this way at some point of time, wanting to try new things, but the band is limiting them. which is why side bands are there :D of course its better to talk to your band mates about how you feel first to prevent any misunderstandings

hmmm ... im usually a lead/rythm player in the band... currently all i am the only guitarist in my bands.. all 3 of them. Some how we all agree having another guitarist means more guitar parts and guitar ego.

Playing in a band is fun, esp when u and your band mates finish a tough set... or play a wild gig. This kind of joy and pure adrenalin priceless. If you just wanna free play... or free solo... it is highly possible that your skills are pretty amazing.

but unless you are a VERY good guitarist... im pretty sure no crowd wants to hear a guitarist wanking over a backing band. Other wise .. i suggest you , like me.. play for the song.

a compromise with your band would be to allocate say... 12 - 16 bars of solo for you ... during the songs... and its up to you to make every note count in this solos. If you cant bring 12 bars to life... then forget about free soloing during jams.. cus everyone is paying for the jam. imagine in everyone in the room free solo.. thats havoc man.... but if you all damn gifted... then its probably freestyle jazz ..

my 2cents. take with pinch of salt.

thor666 i have set those many times! but it all ends up in vain! they are like " ok ok we'll try it out " but in the end, ..... Dust man! damn disappointing!

as for the gear i knw it doesnt matter much. i wanna experiment wif them and then more inspirations will pour in! and more creativity will come too! u knw wat i mean!

i find it hard to quit cos somehow they coerce me to staying in again n stuff like dat! and over the years, we've been thru shit together and built up our bond as frens and as brothers! in dat way i kinda find it hard to scram! ive told them to put feelings aside, as in " business is business, frens fresn " ting but dat never worked out eiother! im doomed man! ive to find my balls bro!

Strats
even after so many table talks and discussions, nothing has changed! ive lowered myself to their playing standards u knw! (no offence to them though) and when i hv no freedom of expression, all the more i feel tainted!

u knw, up to tis very second, ive not been able to put in a single of my compositions in? and at one time i threw them all away. and now i hv nothing except memories! of which some ive forgotten! tis really sux man! sometimes i feel like quiting music in all!

I really don't know how to help you. This is not the problem of the band. It seems to be a problem with your thinking. Do look this over.

pls correct me if m wrong in tis part ok!

When playing a song, when it comes to a certain solo, the scale may change to the "feeling" of that lead guitarist and the rhythm will play along to accomodate! but of course the scale doesnt sway too far that it sounds so obvious! as long it sounds nice and suits the song rite ????

cos sometimes i hv a prb playing to a given scale!
my feel gets the better of me at times!

Chanmin i don consider myself as a very skilled player now! maybe back a few years ago ... probably! but ever since tis band developed, ive lost some of it!

i love to play slow melodic leads, shred here and there, tapping! and messing mif my floyd! im still learing some sweeping! i someimte lack in practise cos of time constrain!

On the contrary i find effects limit my songwriting sometimes, because you end up playing with toys and not playing with guitar/writing songs. You gotta have something very clear in your mind already even without the effect to translate it well.

You answered yourself. The choices are clear, it's just that you can't bear to make a decision. Ultimatium, quit, reform... they're quite clear cut. No one can make for you these decisions.

well thor666, i guess i gave myself the answer huh!

but the choice of leaving them can be done, im afraid to spoil the frenship between them! We're a 7 man band bro! haha! dats like huge sia!

i guess i really really hv to gather my nuts man!

Today I was feeling kinda down :( And I kinda verbalize some thoughts which I knew all along, but unable to articulate it... But somehow, I managed to chord it while talking to a friend...

Again, it may not applies to you cos the platform of the issue is totally different. Anyway, it goes like this...

"Everything, or matter in the World is ever-revolving and evolving, it is only our mind, that (un)controllably remains as a constant"

The rest would be intuitional for you to decipher...

Happy playing music...

haa i use this 2 pedals too and i'm happy with it..

wad do u guys play, y the nid for 7 members? (curious)

anyway the more ppl means there's bound to be more conflict, each person with a mind of his own..

if u've already spoken to them abt this problem and can't reach an agreement juz leave the band, u can still be friends.. mayb not as close, but heck u say they leave u in the dark so wad's the point in sticking on..

wad do u guys play, y the nid for 7 members? (curious)

well nefianz, at 1st there was only 4 of us! ( drummer, bassist, < me, rhythm and lead> and another guitarist <rhythm and keyboards> )

as my my other guitarist who plays the keyboards too, he was only pretty ok at rhythm but better off at the boards mostly but wants to be more of a rhythmist instead! and when he went onto the boards, and i on the leads, a rhythm was missing! so we wanted to hv one more! so many came but finally stuck to me only!

then the other prb was we couldnt concerntrate whilst playing and singin together!

so there came a vox ( male)

since we love to play anything from classic rock to goth metal, they wanted to have a female vox!

so there u go,

bassist,
ME,
another rhythmist,
2 vox
drummer

so its 6!

sorry typo error .... 6 members not 7!

supposed to be 7 ( another rhythm ) but if this rhythm came in, my other rhythm would stick to the boards! but the 7th couldnt make the commitment!

so he left and its 6 left now!

thanx pal! :)

quiting is an option but its gonna be very hard for me to do it! but if hv to be done den it has to be done!

the reason why its gonna be tough is because ive to start all over again from scratch! and im already 21 man!

HaiZzZ!

Cheers!

Hey man,
if they're really your friends, then they would understand your reasoning. Just talk things out nicely, I'm sure it'll be okay. Do be polite about the whole issue, state your direction, where you want the band to be going and what you want your role in the band to be and if all that doesn't work out, summon the balls and tell them. You've got my support that's for sure, so go for it! and once again i say if they're really your friends they would understand :)

21, you're still young :) its not as if you're 45 or something but even then its not so much of a problem

Ichiro: hi 5 too! haha!

i knw its not "too old"yet but den come to tink abt it, we're 21 now, ive not even completed NS! den we gotta tink abt our future job, support mum and dad, be kinda more family oriented abit here and there! den comes the band! Most passionate abt it! if i break up from them, then time has to go in from scratch to rebuild it! and it will take more time now as we hv other responsibilities to take care of! time wont be on our side like when we were younger!

i mean tis is juz my point of view!

Orcfiend: ive tried talking to them many times already! it only workz for awhile only! im glad i hv ur support bro! it matters alot to me! Serious! i hv the balls to tell em off, its wat happens next is wat i don wanna foresee! cos along the way we hv built up the bond! and i will hv to make my heart stone to do it! which i hv no prob doing! i love music alot! and tis is my 1st band and we've worked up thus far! we produce nice originals .... yes! but my emotions sway at times! maybe i'll gif it my last shot at talking to them!

in view of getting a new line up, i fear i wont get wat i want! i really want a versatile group who loves to compose and make songs from free jam! where all is from pure inspiration and passion!

Thanx a Million guys!
