Awakening Vibrato

How do you awaken your vibrato?

I've been researching the Internet and there have been a divided opinion about how one could go about awakening Vibrato.

1) Singing techniques such as trilling, diaphragm control and the gospel jaw. Some say it is incorrect /unhealthy and leads to wobbles while others say it differs from people to people and might just work for you.

2) Keep singing with the conventional good support and breathing techniques and your vibrato will awaken.

Age is another factor and when we reach maturity, vibrato will usually manifest itself.

Unfortunately I'm not so fortunate with Vibrato. I've sang in a Choir for 4 years during my teenage years and now that I'm 21 I realized I've yet to awaken my vibrato. Some might disagree with me on this but I feel that all successful singers out there have vibrato in their singing. Be it subtle or the insane vibrato in operas and musicals, we are naturally attracted to vibrato in singing and it really distinguishes the accomplished singers from the amatures.

So how and when did your Vibrato awakened?

Should I try those thrilling techniques or stick with the conventional method of singing till Vibrato manifests?

Or simply the fact that some people are not meant for singing and Vibrato will never appear.

I would appreciate advices because it's really frustrating trying to bring out the Vibrato in your singing but it just doesn't appear.

My vibrato "woke up" through SLS training. Every now and then it would just appear, and then usually go away a moment later as I tried to keep it there. Nowadays it is easy to get, though not so easy to have it there while singing.

Waking it up involved gradually moving my singing from a very tense method to a relaxed method. As I relaxed more, the vibrato came more and more often.

I'm not a fan of techniques of creating vibrato as they sound fake to me. But they are popular in some singing styles.

i dun really know how i got my vibrato but it just sticks with me....hehe...

maybe u got to be singing all day and all night till its just second nature to u????

I've listened to your Video. That is the exactly the Vibrato I am trying to achieve!!! The Vibrato when you hold the note at the end of every sentence/phrase. Just curious, intead of techniques, I would like to know what sensation you feel when you Sing especially for the vibrato.

When you hold the note at the end with a Vibrato, where do you think your voice is "Resonating" from?
1) The Nose and Eyes area.
2) At the back of your head.

When you Vibrato, do you consciously feel your diaphram vibrating as well? Or do you feel "movement" in your throat. Otherwise could you explain the sensation when you vibrato?

what u were saying made me start thinking actually
i never really thought about how i sang so i just sang a line and i'm going to write down what it felt like to me

just a bit of history so u know.... about 4-5 years ago i was told by this singing teacher i had nothing special and that i would never be a great singer....so i stopped going back and i gave up singing completely....i threw away every single technique i tried to learn and i couldnt be bothered about what people told me was wrong and right....i just sang for the fun of it and when i threw it all away, i found my voice....

so now, when i sing i feel as though the few pipe like things inside my throat are expanding and the notes are moving like fluid on a tray that u just have to slide here and there....
most of the time i feel like the singing happens from the region around the chest to the head area but i do not feel like my "nose or eyes or back of my head"

when i am moving from one note to another i just feel like the note is moving lower....i dunno why whether or not the note is the same or moving up, i just kinda always have the feeling that its moving down....and i kinda relax into the note.....kind of like when u sigh or moan....

i have never felt my diaphragm moving or vibrating and i've never used my diaphragm....i dunno why but last time when i was told to try i just felt it never contributed to anything in my vocals....

do u understand what i'm trying to say??? i hope u find some sense in what i'm saying ....
of cos the best way is to show u in person cos i dunno how to describe hahah

I can deduce Vibrato will manifest itself when singing is completely relaxed. (Feel no strain whatsoever) This of course takes practise to sing in a more relaxed manner even when hitting the higher notes. Hence, the need for support from the diaphragm.

Btw, you singing is expressive and engaging to hear!! You are also starting to develop your own style of singing which resemble a little like a gospel singers. Full of energy and emotion!
And although I am not extremely good at singing, you might be actually using your Diaphragm without you realising it because your voice sounds well supported.
Note: This is purely my personal opinion.

Thanks sooo much because I am starting to hear nuances of vibrato when I sing!

Place your finger at the region of soft meat just below your rib cage, above your tummy. Start vocalising any random pitch ( of course, it has to be the kind of voice that is crispy loud, clear and sharp, the ones that you've been training to reach for all these years ). Start pressing and releasing the area once you start pitching the note, vigorously. That sensation that you feel at the pressured region is how it is suppose to feel like when you do a vibrato.

Oscillate

Vibrato can add colour and variety to a vocal performance. However, do understand that it is a technique that has its place. Think of the effect that you are trying to create by utilizing vibrato.

To that end, I learned vibrato (through SLS) as simply a sustained variation, an "oscillation", if you will, btw 2 notes. In more operatic styles, the difference in pitch between the 2 notes can be great, resulting in a "bouncing" vibrato. In other styles, the oscillation is subtle, becoming more of a dreamy wave that ends off a note.

Start by varying between 2 comfortable notes really slowly. As you practice, you will find yourself able to "oscillate" btw the 2 notes at higher frequencies. Listen to how commercial singers from different styles use their vibrato: the place, the oscillation, the frequency. Experiment and discover for yourself.

It is important to develop good basics. Do not attempt shoving in your solar plexus to create a vibrato effect. You will never feel comfortable.

Good luck, fellow singer. :p
