hi all...

just a normal discussion.

i was thinking of this topic since last nite.
hw do u guys/gals do an audition to fill up ur band?

i noe tat there are many ways in doing so. and maybe we can share.
sumtink like, do u charge any administration fees?
interview b4 plan to jam?

ok go!

Normally I do my homework on a particular candidate by asking for their previous expiriences etc. I also refer to contacts in the scene on the individual concerned etc... as such 80% of the time I already have in mind who wud be the best candidate to fill the slot. The informal meet up & jam will cement the deal of course.

One thing I must stress that while playing ability is important of course, chemistry with the rest of the band is paramount.

The vocalist hangout/ karaoke session is a good place to scope out potential frontmen, as me & bro Faz had also done our "recruiting" there :-)

cool.

as for me... normal thru contacts.
meet up chit chat, drink kopi. then choose a few covers to jam, set the date.
jam for a few sessions and band members decide.

but i saw sumtink funny yesterday after jamming.
there is tis poster advertising looking for a drummer.
got state band's influences etc
but the weird part tat i read is...
the drummer have to pay 10bux for audition.
stylo milo ah...

well I guess since many bands sell tickets to play in gigs, some drummers would pay for the audition..? Or wud they?

Kinda "off" if U ask me but to each their own man bro ...

yeah true bro...

i think tat was meant for the studio booking.
but should write clearer if its meant for tat or it is sure misleading...lol

yah but funny rite, $10 per drummer say 5 drummers audit thats $50 - enuff to pay for 2 hours studio. + $$$ to eat roti prati & drink kopi after dAT ..while the rest of the band members no need pay?

In the past, when I audition a band member I don't normally ask them to pay for the studio. I believe people who come for audition should never pay. That goes the same when I am being auditioned, I don't normally offer to pay. I did paid once with one band who auditioned me as the leader of the band asked for equal sharing after being called in playing 2 songs. Well, I was selected to join them but I never did. It's not about money but more to principles. But again, it all depends on individual. Until that person is selected, the next round we will all share the dough for payment.

IMO this is the best way. if you want someone good, you should take the effort to go out there and scout for a suitable member. if not, go to musicians wanted/available and see what the cat drags in

i believe that the most amazing bands are formed not by auditioning members, but between best buddies.

of course you can become best buddies after auditioning lah, that does happen too :)

spot on dude - Retro Groove members are best buds .... we really love being with each other despite f****** each other in the studio during rehersals over arrangements etc - but it's kept in the studio only.

The thing is, sometimes in order to stay best buds, the group has to move on (e.g Syne of Tyme). We are still the best of pals but it was hard to stay together as a group. I guess ppl change, music preferances change, priorities change .... but the friendship must remain.

It really strange coz when I do session work for other bands - especially the jazz act - it's all very mercenary - musos show up, gig, collect $$$ then immediately after split ..with a "ok see U next time" ... I mean everybody's ok and cool but it's almost like a "strictly business" thingy ...

2 cents to the cost of the studio rental for ya..

just call them in to the studio and try out.

i don really care about playing skill....more concerned about whether the playing style and attitude is right.

Sometimes having best buddies in a band is not that good.

When me and my buddies started off, wahh all dam, on every week jam twice. All dam tight.

But being best buds you find it hard to tell them to stop fooling around in the studio. And when they go into the studio never learn their songs, want to scold them also paiseh. Or else even better, come my place to compose, end up 5 hours never do anything except winning eleven.

The bands tight when they want to, but it's like they are all just fooling around 99% of the time just cause we're buddies. I'm dam frustrated ah!!

Right now we're still best buddies, still in the band and we hang out all the time, but our direction really stuck there, after having one good original, we're not progressing at all. :(

And back to main topic, I think it's retarded to charge to audition, unless you are like some big shot band going on world tour or something.

like tat cannot la...
must set priority (correct not spelling) right.
play=play
fcuk=fcuk
music/band=serious :)

What my band did is simple,
1. Get Candidate (mostly like be friends of friends)
2.Interview(experience, genre)
3.The Test(jamming sessions):-D

So after these have been done, we evaluate the good/bad, reveal results which are always pleasing. Besides that, we just have a great time.

haha ,thanks bro. I'd like to return the favor but.... as you can see I lack in the reps department. ;)
