Hey,fellow S.O.F.Ties!I need help with a recurring problem that occurs everytime after I sing.My left jaw muscles tend to hurt after a session of singing, and it would hurt for maybe an hour or so before it goes away on its on.I don't know if I'm straining my left jaw muscles too much or is it problems with my singing technique.
I tend to sing mostly Green Day songs, and I sing like Billie Joe.(Well,I get my voice to sound like him,but I don't know if I'm doing it safely,or correctly.Besides the problem with my left jaw muscles,I'm perfectly fine after singing though,I mean, nothing else hurts/feels weird.)However, after singing,my jaw muscles would start to hurt, like from over-exertion or something.
I'm open to all suggestions on how to stop this problem and I'd also like to know from what you guys know, seems to be the cause of this.
(PS:I'm self-taught,and I only do basic warm ups such as lip thrills,"ma ma ma ma ma"s,"nay nay nay nay nay"s on scales before singing.I am also able to sing with support from my diaphgram.)

First of all, take a break from singing. It's the most important.

It'll be hard to determine what exactly is causing the problem if I cannot see how you sing. It can be from a lack of vitamins, dropping and locking your jaw in the wrong position, straining for high notes, opening too wide and/or other factors. As a vocal coach myself, I realise some modern schools of singing hurts you. If you want you can always give me a call and/or arrange a meet up with me.

I've one more question to ask before I carry on with my singing.Singing to me is how I express myself best, and I'll never give it up for anything in the world!:D
Qn:Is your singing supposed to be the same volume as your speech level?(Meaning, when you sing,is your volume the same as when you speak normally?Or is it supposed to be higher/lower?I know it would sound more pitchy than your speech, but what about in terms of loudness?)
[*Taking into account that you're performing and singing into a mic, which ampilifies your singing*]

(PS:I've found the solution to my previously mentioned problem/s.)

Hey SGPunk93,

What was the solution you found to your jaw? Share it with us so maybe someone with the same problem next time has another source of reference =)

The speaking volume varies from whispering to shouting loudly, so I'm not exactly sure what your question is asking specifically about. Since technically everyone should be able to sing a whole range of volumes as well, from let's say ppp to fff (music notation).

Sidenote: An untrained singer would be unable to sing extreme volumes properly.

So one can choose to sing the same volume as his/her speech, choose to be louder or softer: it's all subjective.

Gary.
