SYCO is under the management of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) since 2003 and has held its premiere concert in 2004. From June 2009, under a collaboration of the Ministry of Education and SCO, SYCO was elevated to the status of National Project of Excellence (NPOE), with the vision to nurture potential talents and groom them to be the future pillars of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral music scene. To date, three former SYCO musicians have made music their career through passing the audition to join SCO as a full-time professional Chinese orchestra musician.
Besides earning CCA points under the LEAPS scheme, SYCO members also get exclusive opportunities to attend music camps, master classes and workshops conducted by maestros and guest artistes. They get various performances opportunities to enhance their musical exposure. In 2005 and 2007, selected SYCO members have participated in the Hong Kong Youth Music Camp. The orchestra was also invited to perform at the Tainan International Qixi Art Festival in July 2006 and perform at the Taiwan Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival in July 2013.
