Singer-songwriter Art Fazil first grabbed Singapore’s attention in January 1992 when The Straits Times published a raving review of his performance at the Substation with the headlines- ‘Folk Power’.
He released a solo English album the following year under the Japanese label Pony Canyon. The self titled debut was dubbed to by his fans as the Rainbow Child album, after one of the tracks. It featured favourites such as the rebel anthem Mama I Can’t Breathe and Everybodyelse.
The single, Sometimes When I Feel Blue climbed to the number two spot in the 98.7 FM Radio charts and won Best Local English Pop Song at the COMPASS Music Awards. Art also had success with his Malay folk rock band Rausyanfikir, winning two COMPASS Music Awards for his composition Fikir Fikir and a gold disc award in Malaysia.
In the midst of critical acclaim and commercial success, Art dropped out of the scene. He resurfaced in London, reinventing himself as a folk troubadour performing at renowned music venues such The Rock Garden, Bungies, The 12 Bar Club, and the world famous Kashmir Klub. Some of his best ‘live’ cuts were captured in his 1998 release Acoustic Juju which also included the Edinburgh's Fringe Festival’s Song Competition winner, Monsoon Rain. Art has also toured clubs in Turkey, Germany and Ireland.
Songs of the Rainbow Child is a one night only acoustic performance that will take the audience through a journey of Art Fazil’s music from its seedlings in the heartland of Singapore to the world’s stage.
