Anyone modded an SD-2?

Hi folks, I use a Boss SD-2 dual overdrive I bought many years back. It's got two separate channels, crunch and lead, with independent settings... you can switch between the two for playing rhythm and lead. The distortion on the lead channel is ok but the crunch channel sucks. With low drive, it sounds thin and lifeless and pathetic, and with the drive boosted to max, it still sounds thin.

Has anyone got their SD-2 modded to improve the performance on the crunch channel? Or should I just forget about it and simply add another pedal (mild overdrive / gain boost) to switch between lead and rhythm? Thanks.

I had an SD-2 before... spoke to Randolf abt modding it.. he says it can be done!!!

If I rem correctly, the crunch channel can be modded to an SD-1. Which is GOOD.

Thanks Daniel, I've sent a mail to Randolf. I've read on the web at some other sites that the SD-2 has been modded, but haven't had a chance to hear the tone after the mods.

Well!!! I find the SD-2's lead channel tone AMAZING. Very heavy but still retains it warmth...

But the crunch channel is kind of yucky to me... and it can't possibly get worse right? ;)

Get it modded lah... otherwise, its unusable except for ZZ Top songs.

Instead of doing a mod, I'm thinking of getting a (sort of) cheap daddy-o overdrive and hooking it up with the SD-2. That way, for rhythm I can still use the SD-2 on its lead channel with the drive set to minumum, and during the lead solos, switch on the daddy-o for a little boost. There's a few daddy-o's around for sale these days. Hmmmm?

Sure, why not? If the Daddy O is a good overdrive pedal...

I used a TS9DX to boost my SD-2 last time and it was pure metal tones... Did a recording with that, look for a post on X2N showcase.

But do note, that with a mod you will prob revive the crunch channel to something usable.... that that on its own, can be the rhythm channel. I would think modding is better since the SD-2 already has 2 channels, why just use 1 channel and grab another stompbox that would take up extra power/space and make you tapdance?

Yeah, maybe I should get both done! Getting my cheap daddy-o tomorrow evening, will see how that works with the SD-2 first. Then the mod...
