I've bought quite a lot of stuff online for the past few years as I suffer from GAS periodically  like to share some experiences..
Remembered my first online purchase was the mesa triaxis from
www.mattsmusic.com. Came well packed via UPS, and I was charged some extra taxes etc apart from the shipping costs. I think usually if the value of the item is above $500, there would be handling fees, GST etc. Paid using bank wire so the bank charged a fee for that as well. Took a few weeks to get everything done.
Consequently, got many guitars online all over the place..from
www.chucklevins.com,
www.guitartrader.com,
www.basscentral.com etc and more recently from
www.ishibashi-music.com. Some stores state explicitly they do not ship overseas due to dealer policies but sometimes they do if you email them and make alternative arrangements.
My experience with ishibashi had been the most pleasant. Fast shipping and communication and very well packed.
Gotten quite a lot of pedals etc from ebay as well. Sold two mesa amps on ebay to aussie land as well. Oh ya, sold a guitar once to Germany! I usually accept bank wire payments and I also use Paypal to pay/get paid for my items. I think what's most important is to use your discretion when you make online purchases. Always communicate with the buyer/seller well before taking the plunge. For ebay users, checking the user's feedback is also essential.
Hope this helps a little. Have fun buying!
