Yo softies, I need your help...I'm upgrading from my prac amp to a tube amp(with at least a 8 or 10 inch speaker). But I'm not very clear about tube amps. I'm looking at Vox, the Joyo tube amp at SV Guitars penin, mega amps and Ibanez amps. I've got a budget up to 420. I'm looking for a amp with J-rock/metal tone and a warm clean. Pls recommend other amps too if you think it has the above mentioned tones. Thnx.

Tube amp with at least a 8' or 10' speaker? No way would i compromise like that. A tube amp sounds best with a 12' speaker. And $420 isn't the biggest budget, if you're looking for a full tube. Frankly, i feel that there is absolutely no need for you to get a tube amp, go work on your playing first. I don't know how long you've been playing, but my guess is no more than 2 years. (My apologies if i'm wrong or you think i've insulted your ability) You'd be better off looking for another solid state that offer those kind of tones, though in my experience, for that price range, no solid state has fulfilled your requirements. Just stick with that old practice amp, you really don't need a tube amp, unless you're going to be gigging.

I dun think that there will be any tube amps that can get the amount of gain that you are looking for without the use of pedals. The closest I would think is the Blackstar HT-5, even then reviews say that it has a bland clean channel. Amps like the Vox AC4TV/TV8, Epiphone Valve Junior and Blackheart Killer ant/Little giant take pedals well so they could be worthy contenders. If you don't mind hybrid amps, do take a look at the Vox VT30, well within your budget that can get really nice sounds and very versatile. 10 inch speaker too!

I agree with WorldWithoutE. The amount of gain from the amp,for your budget, may not be sufficient for metal. You will probably need a pedal to boost it. Personally i think the vox pathfinder 15's clean tone comes close to a tube-like sound. Very nice clean. I think it's going for $148 at City Music. For remaining money, you can use it on pedals to get your metal tone. I recommend the biyang metal end king. A good and affordable pedal.
