Any Must-Visit Music Related Places In New York?

Other than Carnegie Hall and Broadway obviously, what other places can you guys recommend for me to visit when I go to New York early next month?

I am not really the dancing type, so let's count salsa out. ;)

I wonder if there are any jazz festivals or free (or otherwise) public concerts in October that I really shouldn't miss.

Definitely I want to go to an underground club and check out those bands too, anyone with experience here to advise?

Oh, how about musical instrument shops? Would love to visit a huge one, and maybe bring back a Jaguar or my dream light teal Flying V!

For music shops I definitely recommend Rudy's Music, on 7th Ave. Great service, HUGE range of stuff. Have bought plenty of stuff from them, no regrets thus far. Enjoy your trip!

you are very lucky indeed. NYC is the best city for music in my opinion.
If you're into jazz, you could check out the programs at the knitting factory, or tonic.
The Bowery Ballroom attracts a lot of the indie bands on the rise, and there is Joe's pub, too. All these venues have very nice websites with extensive calendars!

And don't forget to cross the bridge to Brooklyn: this is where a lot of the action is happening right now. You'll probably run into a band or two on the street... :)

have fun!
