Well, Mike Shinoda's a natural rapper because he started off young doing hip hop. Well, their story is very much unique. Like us at our 17-19 year old stage, they meet up at Mike's house everyday to write songs and jam. Mike Shinoda is a natural musician (he raps, plays the piano, plays the lead guitar, and he juggles!) who co/wrote most songs. He's latest collaboration with Fort Minor really made the airwaves more lively (IMO) with the track "Believe Me".
Well from the trend i see here, i think it's partly because most of the SOFTies here are into fast shredders and guitar-technique players like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Slash etc. People tend to like a band for their techniques and hate them at the same time for the very same reason. There was another thread on Good Charlotte and Sum41 where people just complained about their style of music, probably because these bands don't fall in favour of SOFTies due to their lack of guitar showmanship. Just a bit of my two-cents worth..
Well, their use of equipment attracts me the most. From their custom PRS with the LP logo, to the stingray basses Phoenix uses, to the Ibanez RGs that both guitarists use and the massive Mesa Boogie Dual Head Rectifiers, not to mention the DJ equipments they use too. Give them a chance, don't just look at how boring Brad plays the guitar. Brad and Phoenix can play really fast, it's just that their songs do not cater for solos. There was this video of Brad shredding, and boy was it an eye-opener. I mean, you just DON'T use a PRS to play chords that Primary 6 students can play (those down-tuned chords that you just have to put one finger to -play the whole chord kind)
