The MIT DS1s are noisy, fizzy and very lo fi sounding.
The level is well, you might as well leave it full on, all the time! From 1pm to full, very little difference.
The tone is only usable from 9oclock to maybe 11oclock. 7 to 9, too dark and muddy, past 11, it fizzles out.
The distortion control is... moderately responsive at best. Its not a uniform gain increase/taper.
Stock, its not dynamic, does not clean up well and its harsh.
However, the DS1 has this unique fuzz/distortion kind of tone, and it does add sustain and good thickness to your tone as a boost. Thats what makes it so... special.
The Analogman DS1 is THE DS1... its what the DS1 should have been. I used it for a while, and though the analogman is still noisy (ds1 circuitry, inherent) its just so full, bassy, responsive/dynamic, cleans up well and its smoother (not as smooth as the mij DS1). I sold the DS1 to Ronin's guitarist... he was very impressed with it. I was more impressed by Malcom's Hellbilly fuzz/od and the skreddy Screw Driver.
