Amp Talk

I am currently using a Peavey Envoy 110. But recently, I've been playing my guitar clean through this amp and the sound ain't that nice. So I was thinking of upgrading my amp to something that sounds very nice when playing clean, and also, can handle distortion well(even metal distortion cos i'm also a metal fan).

I am looking at VOX amps now and there is this huge hype about AC4TV head and cab. Is it a good amp to play clean and can it handle distortion pedals well? I am currently using MT-2 as a metal distortion and i'm planning to get a MI audio crunchbox and Ibanez TS9 as well.

Amp suggestions are also welcomed! FYI, I like to play covers by alternative, rock and metal. I also like songs like Your Guardian Angel which has a very nice tone from overdrive, and clean songs such as High and Dry by Radiohead.

Also, what is a head and cab? Two separate units but how does it work? I've seen Youtube videos of people using the AC4TV Head hooked up to another cab of another brand.

The AC4TV would suit your needs pretty well if you have a distortion pedal to achieve high gain tones.

A head is basically the amplifier in a chassis without any speakers. There won't be any sound if you turn on the head without it plugged into a speaker cabinet (doing this will also potentially damage your amp). A cab, short for cabinet, is an enclosure for speakers which are generally of a 8", 10", 12" or 15" size. They are not amplifiers in themselves, and have no circuit in it. It simply mounts the speakers into a cabinet which is wired into jacks on the back of the cabinet. This jack allows the cabinet to connect to the head through a speaker cable, so the head will drive its sound out through the speaker cabinet.

Some combos (amplifier chassis + speakers in one enclosure) come with "Speaker Out" jacks. This allows you to plug into a separate speaker cabinet to work in addition to the combo itself, so you can plug the tiny AC4TV, for example, into a wall of 4x12" cabinets to play Wembley Stadium. :)

And while we are at it, I would just like to mention that I just got my AC4TV. It gave justice to my guitar. Before, I was plugging my guitar into a Spider III 15watts. Though it gave an OK sound, I felt that there was really something missing. I felt that the sound of my guitar was quite bland and still missing some highs despite the treble knob being on max. Now thanks to my AC4TV, I can now hear the true representation of the tone of my guitar.

that's good to hear. my current peavey envoy 110 always seems to lack treble and the bass is too overwhelming. sounds tempting. where can I give it a try?

best doesnt exist if we have no idea of what are the choices out there and trying out most of it to suit the music we play

so yeah, there is no best, only what we prefer, according to budget, sound that fit in to music we play etc..

Most importantly is your style of music and what sounds best to you. If there was such a thing as " best ", all great guitarist will be using the same amps right now.

If it helps, I used to hate the sound coming from a spare amp that I have (Smarvo 4010RC) until I tried send out the signal via ext speaker out to a Marshall 1922 cab and I was overwhelmed by the sound quality of the clean channel. (By my own sound preference it sounds even better that the Line 6 Spider III HD75 that I am now contemplating to sell off - ok to qualify, HD75 is good but I've already my floor pod which works well through the smarvo effects loop.). I am considering now hooking it up to other cabs to feel the difference from this cheapo amp. If satisfied, I'll disect it and remove it from the combo cab that it comes along with and convert it into a rack unit or something. Or maybe change the speakers to something better and seal up the cabinet.

p.s. anyone interested on the HD75, do PM. ;)

Oh Ya, the demo link in my Signature is the HD75 hooked up to the Marshall 1922.
