hi guys, ok i'm looking to buy a 15 watt amp for home practice, and i started hearing about valve-state and solid state amps. Could somebody enlighten me on what these are or what diff does it make. Also is the overdrive in a small 15 watt marshall amp enough, cos i have no effect pedals.

well the 15 watt has no kick , you'll get sick of it , i have a 30 watt marshall and im already sick of it hahah , changing to 100 watts soon should my dad permit . but 30 watts is decent enough , especilly if you notice the difference on clean , you want that thick bassy sound

You will find that 15 watt tube amps have kick. Look at the Laney LC15R. Great Fender-ish cleans. You crank up the gain and volume, it will give you really heavy tones, even without the need of a booster. If you have a od/booster, better yet.. It's really awesome. You won't get sick of tube 15watters.

And wattage =/= power.

15 watt tube amps > any watt solid state in terms of tone IMO.

15 watt tube amps can equal to 30-45 watts of solid state, so no worries about volume, if you're playing in bedroom / small gig level. You can always mic it for larger venues.

Also, IMO, stay away from solid state Marshalls, especially the MG, none of all the solid state Marshalls I've tried out have impressed me. My own 2 cents. I hope I don't offend anyone by saying this.

i dont recommand getting the marshall mg's nor the line6 spiders . get the vox or roland if u're looking for a soild state amp . better in tone and price 8)

and what's your budget too? for classic rock i would recommend a Johnson hybrid tube, it sounds real sweet with an overdrive in front of it. 15 watts i think, heard they stock them at ranking. and uite cheapp too around <$200? if you're looking to play higher gain stuff unless your budget is high you might want to consider the line6 amps or the roland cubes, wont need any pedals with those

Damn my budget is kinda low, like 150 bucks ( pathetic i know, but i'm also intending on getting a BOSS DS-1) anyways i finally understand solid state and valve state amps. I'm really really keen on the MGR15CDR, any reasons i shouldn't get it, btw it's second hand

quote zax: true true , tube 15 watters are amazing , get those , say 400 ++

not necessarily. get anything that works for you, tube or otherwise.

getting affordable gear isn't something to be ashamed of; it's pathetic owning a $4K amp & not knowing how to play...

fender tube 15 watters cost about 400 . hey thread starter , settle for the marshall mg15 then , its a very good buy

Errm......i wldn't recommend the marshall actually.......personal experience. I'd suggest the Vox Pathfinder 15R frm citymusic. I tink its exactly at ur budget and its one of the best small practice amps around. Jus lamenting the lack of a midrange control if i'm not wrong......

ooh i dont think beginners should fret about amps YET should they?

a decent solid state for them to practice until they learn more about tones and stuff before making the upgrade

if u wanna gd amp, try the Vox Valvetronix! they're hybrid amps! sorta tube mix solid state! and actually they'll serve u damn well if u knw how to EQ ur pedals and the amp!

i've a 100 Watter Vox >>> AD100VT! kix arse! well some mite beg to differ for certain genre preferance but i guess you'll hv to hear it for urself to knw! Drop me a PM if u wanna try my amp out! no worries!

Its my main amp now, my Marshall's collecting dust! haha!

Cheers!
