My 5 years old Mitsubishi StarMax aircon broke down and the tech said it would cost more than $500 for the repair. So, I am looking at getting a new one instead.

Any suggestion to reliable brand/model to consider?

As the room is quite large, is it better to have

1 x 18,000 btu
or
2 x 9,000 btu

sorry couldn't help it...

I have no idea, but I would like to know too cos I'm getting my own place already..

hey vick

You are right, the 18k cost about $1.7k and the 2x9k cost about $2.5k.

One little problem I have with my single split is that it kinda cool one part of the room but couldn't reach the other end of the room. This make me think that having 2 fan unit could cool the room more evenly.

Don't know if I am making sense or not.

better repair it.. what fault izit anyway?
cause starmax is good, t have a Variable Refrigerant Volume.
it help u save ur utility bill and best of all, it can detect how many person in the room so as to give how much cooling air..

I learn it at ite..
my school teach me..haha
gpa 3.5 ma
hahaha!

The tech said compressor capacitor must change + compressor motor starting to make funny noise (sign of breaking down).

Haiz.. these electrical stuff are now built to spoil in 5 years. If I spend the money to repair it, I will still be stuck with a 5 year old technology and chances of it breaking down is higher than a new unit.

You have any suggestion for brand/model to look out for?

wow thats ex.. my uncles an aircon genius and it definitely costs less then that if you look for the right tech.

the second point is very true, most of my dad's clients actually request for more then 1 aircon unit as it lessens the workload of a single aircon unit, and it does make sense as the cool air is spread out more evenly

I recommend you try those Made in Japan models....may be slightly more ex...

My parents house uses a MIJ SANYO compressor that and it lasted for 20 over years...

I am currently using a MIJ Daikin Compressor...already coming 5 years ...still going strong I guess...hehe....

Heard the Daikin & Toshiba are more reliable than the rest...prices higher too...:)

compressorchange only 500++ and capacitor change around 100++... but that wana u d.i.y uh..my teacher tach me.. but so far, never done before

gsonique

That's the one I saw at Carrefour! Hee...hee...

For a large room, should I get

1 x 18000 (single split)

or

2 x 9000 (system 2 split)
