Affordable Decent USB Microphone for Home Recording

ok, i might be abit confused here, because the last time i tried recording my amp directly into my soundcard, what i did was turn on an option in Windows Master Volume controls. i think it was something like Front Pink,yeah... well anyway, that allowed me to hear what i was playing through my amp even when I'm not in a DAW(audacity)... not sure if I was doing it right, then.

so the question now is, do you get to hear in your speakers, what your interface is "hearing" if you're not in a DAW? like, if i'm just at my desktop screen, and i plugged my fast track, with a mic plugged in, and i talk into the mic, would i hear anything right now? or do you only start hearing something when u're recording with a DAW?

i think i'm mainly confused by how the term "monitoring" is used - do you only call it monitoring when you have pressed the record button, and you can hear yourself AS you record. or can I also call it monitoring if I just wanna be able to directly hear what the mic/interface is hearing - kinda like if you put a mic through an amp.

just to reconfirm again you've read http://tinyurl.com/diyrecording

the fast track is fine, because of all the software digital cabinet/amp simulation options. I would use that for high gain guitars.
then AT2020 for vocals/acoustic guitars.

oh yea blueprint, nearly left this out - you mentioned software cabs/amp sims, is this package with the Fast Track? Cos I see the Luthermusic one, they only provide ProTools, some virtual instrument thing and a loop library. Are the amp sims u mentioned from ProTools? Or did I miss out something?

Audicity do not support VST I think. If you buy an interface you should get lite version DAW(Sonar,Abeltion,Cubase...etc). Protools will only support RTAS but there is third party VST-> RTAS plug-in. Some will throw in cabs/amp sim. Popular ones are Guitar Gig and IK Amplitude.
