Hi all, i'm planning to get my first drumset and looking for some recommendations, preferably between 500-1k, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

Welcome To Soft FuyunoUta (your 1st post)

Between 500 to 1K for a drumset largely depends on

(1) Which Brand in it's Entry Level in particular you prefer or like most?

If money enough - get a Brand New Kit, if not enough get a Resale Kit

Really depends here.

from my memory let me list for you..

1.calos
2.lazer.
3.peace demo
4. tama entries
5. pearl entries.
6. i think mapex have too.
7.ludwig
etc cant rmbr

thanks RudimentalDrummer and kanzerfor the replies, i'm looking for prehaps Pearl, Ludwig or Tama, but can't find many new sets of these brands within my budget, expect for maybe the Pearl RT, but my friend says that the silent batter heads have a funny feel to it (need confirmation on this). Am considering 2nd hand sets too depending on the quality of the set.

haha lol. ok my personal view. ludwig entries are not tt good. i feel tama and pearl are better. the rt come with both mesh and normal heads. yep.. why not the imperial star? its not tt bad. or pearl visions?

I would suggest getting a second hand set if your budget is around $600-1k.

Based on my experience I managed to get a stage custom for around that price.

My advice is be patient, don't rush.A good buy will come along.

Been playing for the past 30 years and have not been wrong.....

my 2 cents worth........enjoy...:)

Honesty - my opinion is that Ludwig Accent doesn't really sound good at all -not worth buying this kit.

If you are still learning drums - you must have a Basic 5pcs Kit for practice (NEW or Resale) doesn't matter at all, but at least pick a Brand you like eg here Pearl & Tama.

Both Pearl Export, Vision & Tama Imperial Star, Swingstar etc is ok have pretty good Entry-Level Kit and if you have a Budget of 1K I'm sure you can get a Resale Kit (Less than 1K without the Cymbals)....True a Yamaha Stage Custom is more preferred by many within the Entry Level Range due to it's Quality & Hardware....

For 1K, I think you are able to get a MAPEX Brand New Entry Level Kit too, quite a nice sounding kit too and Value for money.....Don't go for Carlos, Laser.

A Pearl RT is a convenient Kit, compact enough to be placed anywhere around the home and it does look good. The sound is also ok - but of course you cannot compare it's sound to those Normal Kits as above (to be fair)...and YES Thesilent Muffler Black Netting Heads that comes with it - gives a totally different feel due to it's rebound.....The tighter you tune it - the greater the rebound.....

Happy Drumming !

well for an entry kit it comes down on wad ur going to use it for?
practice or others?

i'm getting a mapex q series costing $850
its a decent entry kit i supposed since i'm using it for mainly practice.
its the same size as the old Tama Stage Star if u guys didn't noe
so ya not much space constrains.

errrrrrrrrr since u got 1k. my advice is get a entry kit roughly abt $800+?
then spend e rest on decent cymbals ^_^
i don't hav 1k so i'm going to use shitty stock stuff till mayb chinese new year :D

Take a look at the Pearl Forum as well. It's something below the range of the Export series, but definitely something worth your buy. Comes with stock cymbals and hihats.

Or even the Gretsch Blackhawk, has great Gilbratar hardware.

unless u're planning to spend more than 1.5k, the vision doesnt come with cymbals and the price isnt something close to 1k.. close to 2.

Shld spend some time considering if you wanna spend a smaller budget on the kit and using the balance of your cash on better than entry level cymbals....or just sticking with the stock ones if the set does come with one.

Everyone has said this before, cymbals are something that stick with you for life and its sound is fixed unlike drumheads which can be tuned. So give it a thought.

Thanks Logan for agreeing, I've known friends who bought ******brand and regretted buying because the hardware just cannot make it.You ighten too tight and it give way.

I am very happy playing on the Stage custom just using the 10'' 12'' and 16'' toms with the 20'' BD. The advantage buying a second hand set is it usually comes with cymbals......

g'day

seriously take ur time man bro. don't regret wad u get.
well i've heard feedback from many defferent sources.
i would suggest afew to you with tt budget

1st-mapex (i hav tested out and they hav good aft sales service)
2nd-peace (their hardware from wad i hear is good finshes etc)
3rd -gretsch (but i heard e finishes for the toms etc are not v.well done)

this sets u can approach alvinthedrummer. also there is nigel frm DRMP tt is currently 1 of the distributer for mapex. ya i'm a mapex fan now!
alvin has experience with mapex and peace. not sure abt gretsch
but of course all comes down on ur thoughts.
cos having a drumset its going to last u quite long.consider carefully.

y not u come for e nxt drummers meet up? there r many experienced drummers tt can give u fantastic advice on an entry kit

thanks for the replies bros, i'll most probably get a Pearl RT (for the silent batter heads). Heeding the advice of emman91, Logan i'll just look around for awhile more and make my decision in 1 month's time, will more or less get a set that is towards the silent side to avoid complaints. Any bros know if there are any more sets similar to the Pearl RT that are available in the market?

i don't recall of any. to tell u honestly b4 i ordered e mapex i had e thought of e pearl RT. yes it comes with e mesh heads but i felt tt for e price it wasn't worth.

well i'm not exactly a pro but i guess i was in e same situation with u. so ya
good luck man hope u get 1 u want.
practice n bcome n imba drummer man lol!

Do not be mistaken. It does not mean that a small sized drum set, such as the RT, would be silent. Of course, the RT would not be as loud as a full-sized drumset, but it is surely not soft either. As you have said earlier, the RT is almost $800, at which price you can get entry level kits. I am guessing that one buys small sized drums mainly because of space constrains.

Certain drums like RT comes with a mesh head...but some drummers here do not encourage using these mesh heads. So, its really up to you.

If you want something that is truly silent, you had better look at E-drums, and good E-drums would cost you a deep hole in your pocket.

It really depends on what your need is, if it is just for practice then get pads.Or the Alesis elctronic drums is going for around 800+ at Sinamex and use phones, that way you won't disturb your neighbours.I am using a DTX Express 111 at home for practice even though I have an acoustic set.

keep on drumming......

cheers

hey, if u're gonna take a month to look around some more, keep checking back at soft's buy/sell threads and also on luthermusic's classifieds for 2ndhand stuff, if u dun mind that. cos u can score some pretty good deals sometimes, then save the spare cash to jazz up the old kit.

good luck!! :smt003

thx again for the replies guys, i will be observing the buy/sell forums for such deals and look around as well, considering whether to get the RT or the Alesis E-Drums as suggested by bro harvey_mason. Which would have a much realistic feel to it, RT or E-Drums?

To bro emman91: What made you decide on getting the Mapex instead of the RT?

To bro Logan: Advice noted, but I heard that the sounds produced by the mesh heads do not spread to the next room you're playing in. Need a confirmation on this though. I do have quite some space for my set, but its the sound level that i'm more concerned about. I'll most probably go down to Swee Lee one day to check out the RT personally.

FuyunoUta,
there is a kit similar to the PRT called the PDP Chameleon. it has mesh heads, but if u turn the tom on the other side, it's real drum heads. i saw it at Ranking Music for abt $800 plus. it is a smaller kit than the PRT but the advantage is that u don't have to take off the heads to practice on real skins.

trust me, whenever you feel like hearing a real drum sound, and have time to practice during daytime/weekends without waking up sleeping neighbours, this kit is a real advantage.

i kinda regret going with my PRT.

check out the specs of the Chameleon here.
