Right now i have a samick malibu, i am tryin to decide on weather to just get better pick ups or get a whole new guitar in total. Also on a malibu the pickups looks a bit shorter then a conventional strat one.....what should I do?

Hi doc- welcome to the fold... 8)

what are you after?
*better tone?
*different feel?
*more distortion?

if you think you are through with the Malibu, IMO it's time for a change. if you plan to replace all the pickups in that guitar- the spare cost + installation fee is quite significant, might as well get a new guitar, really... if you have super replacement pickups but still running on a practice amp- then you're not gonna hear the difference.

quite a handfull to list- you working within any budget constraints?

for a slayer vibe, you can go with BC Rich but the protrusive design might turn you off...

Epiphones are also good one-up guitar (with ref to your Samick of course...)

any guitar can play metal. its just how u use it lo. well most important feature of a guitar should be de feel of de neck whether ure comfortable with it ( this is a passport for u to go out n try as many diff guitars as u can ). even if sound isnt tt gd its alrite cos u can change pickups.

for metal ull need a very heavy distortion pedal. lots of bottom end n midrange.

btw it also helps if u master all de required techniques. enjoy playing :D

I'd like to add that althought almost any guitar can play metal, not all can do it well, especially in the heavier forms of metal, like slayer. And pick ups are not the end all answer to tone... You can buy a strat and install some nice nifty humbucking EMG but it will never sound as heavy as like an Ibanez RG IMO...

You should consider getting a BC Rich or an Epi as what subversion said... If you are searching for a cheaper way to get heavy sounds... A good distortion pedal is a nice feature like what penta-tonic said but it'd sound bad anyway if your amp is not up to standard...

In any case, tell us your budget, we can help you better find a solution to rock harder!

You could always have an EMG SPC (strat presence control) for a boost to get a fatter heavier sound :)
