In my honest opinion the DS-1. modded or not, is overrated. If you plan on using it with some crappy amp, dont expect any miracles to be honest. There are so many other better drive pedals in the market to consider if you'r planning on using it as your primary distortion.

If you already have a nice amp that's already driven and you wanna boost it into lead territory with it, well thats a different story. That's a reason why vai is using it even though he already has $$$$ amps and rack gear. The DS-1 excels better as a booster imo.

I've tried the Beez modded DS-1 and the Keeley modded one, and here is my honest take on them:

The Keeley DS-1 is a little muddy ....tone control needs to be above 1 o'clock if you'r planning to use it standalone into a tube amp set clean.

The Beez modded DS-1 is supposedly inspired by the Monte Allums mod with a few tweaks from the man himself. The low end is quite solid and the pedal all in all sounds pretty clear, the fizziness of stock is completely gone. However when used into a clean amp it lacks saturation and sustain. However, using it to boost an already overdriven amp is where the magic lies...more saturation and leads start to have serious sustain.

Both pedals sound good when used to boost....Standalone, the most you can get out of them is AC/DC crunch/plexi tones. No higher than that.

actually the DS-1 is quite a good one. it can sound good when it's plugged into a shitty yamaha amp... it sounds very solid and there's sustain too. my tone is only at 12 and the dist at full.

SittingDuck: try the cheapest DS-1 and c if u like it. bcos knowing too much thing will make you ask for more and better stuffs. it's better to know nothing and think dat the MIT DS-1 is good. Haha.

P.S. My DS-1 is not modded.

yup. PLEXI tones. thats why i still love my keeley ds-1. i'm not metal player although i still play metal, neither am i a hardcore shredder, so i struggle for sustain sometimes.

but it caters to my needs perfectly. thats why i love it. honestly, metal players, the ds-1 is not for you. unless, like what ized said, use it as a booster.

Tubescreamer into DS-1 = loads of sustain 8)

The magical combination.

yeah thats what i do too, not a tubescreamer though. an od.

but i dont do it often because i get quite bad feedback most of the time. especially with single coils

cool. i usually play with less gain if i want to stack..... esp on the pedal pushing the main distortion, whether from an amp or another pedal.

General rule of the thumb is drive low and volume up. Also i only kick this boost in for solos for more of that sustain and saturation and turn it off as soon as my solo's done. This helps to curb excessive noise, feedback, as well minimize the killing of little animals and slaughtering them.

hahah yeap my barber ltd is my boost. the drive is always at zero and volume full. yeah i only boost for solos only. other than that its a clean booster.

when i get a proper marshall tube amp then maybe the ds-1 can bye bye already. i'm really sucker for plexi tones.

I think the barber DD nails the plexi tone pretty well. its pretty uncompressed too.

I think marshall is pretty overrated la. the jcm(needs mods) and jvm series still ok but the rest across the board are just terrible imo.

ahhahah thats why i also have the DD..

well, i'm not so inclined to jvm nor the jcm. the one i really want is the 1957x, but more realistically, i'd have to settle for the 50watt vintage modern combo.

the plexi fetish is just a personal preference, i like angus young's simple, and effective tone. thats what i'm looking for.

that's nice too haha. I meant the MG and AVT series of Marshalls....i used some in jamming studios which i shall not name but they really made me think twice about buying something with the Marshall name on it.

But then again, not all are bad....

ARGHHHH DONT TALK ABT THOSE SHIT AMPS. i'm really nvr going back to that place EVER. hahha. the marshall solid states are really terrible. there are still newbies that immediately go for those few because of the marshall name on it. thats why u think marshall is overrated. true, after all so many famous musicians have been using them.

anyway we've strayed away from the topic like sooper far.

Since u wan to get back on topic...

cn the ds-1 do a punk tone like saosin or my chemicl romance? i dun really like heavy stuff and metal anyway...

And can i juz ask what plexi is??:D:confused:

yeah a ds-1 is not a bad choice for punk. since punk does not require nice tight sustain and super heavy chugga.

plexi tone? listen to ac/dc. the plexi tone is the tone made famous by the early marshall amps. to be precise, the JMP super lead plexi.
