(Ableton) Live User Group Singapore (LUGS)

Hi, ableton users!

Want to ask abt using the launchpad vs padKontrol.

I like the fact that padKontrol has the knobs and the x-y pad.

The launchpad has 64 squares though and you can program more in one seesion.

but im not sure which one would be better. But padkontrol is on sale though:)

padkontrol has velocity and bigger pads while launchpad has got automap and it's created specially for ableton. The padkontrol has 16 x 16 squares for you to program at once. IMHO, both of them are dope in their own way but you should get the padkontrol if you wanna do some serious fingerdrumming or play synth because of the velocity sensitive pads. The launchpad's winning point is the automap software.

Its just a auto recognition function which will assign the various controls in live to the physical buttons of launchpad without user having to map it via midi/key press etc.

Oh yeah, actually within live itself, padkontrol also has that function as well, but it aint has as deep as the launchpad.

To have live recognized the midi controller and have its controls inside live to be controlled externally, just need to go to preference/midi/ and select the relevant controller listed. For those controllers listed, its own midi remote script is already inside the resourse folder of live. Through this script, live will recognize the controller and mapped itself accordingly to whats inside the script.

I see.

Have any idea how much the launchpad goes for now?

Sinamex web says $295. But padkontrol is at $209 now. Cant be that big a difference?

Thanks!

not too sure how much is the launchpad now. I got it quite a while back at 295.

Imho, the price difference between padkontrol and launchpad not really a consideration factor. Whats most important is how would you wanna utilized a midi controller like those 2, just for triggering drumrack with velocity or triggering clips, adjusting different controls in live at any time without looking at computer screen all the time, live remxing, looping etc.

I used to have both as well, but sold off the padkontrol a while back to another friend who uses both controllers to run live and in a band setting to trigger samples from launchpad, play synth lines on the padkontrol etc.

End of the day, it really depends on whats the thing you wanna do.

heh, not sure if the group be active again, but for ableton tutorials, theres some links below which might be useful and highly recommended by some. I bought the Tom cosm whole series tutorial dvds, theres some really useful dj-ing templates and remixing tricks in it.

The above has way more then info to digest liao. Other than that, if interested, theres also max 4 live, a max msp add on which run within live and allows user into programming side of ableton itself. Rather intriguing imho.

Hehe, if wanting some more, theres also another side of controlling ableton using OSC protocol, via touchOSC, griid, liine, touchAbleton etc, through iphone, ipad, android phone. I have tried it with android phone, but it didnt work so well as i think the support for android apps to run ableton is not as developed compared to apple product support. When tested on my friend's iphone, it works perfectly using iphone as controller to manipulate ableton.

And if wanting more, theres couple more apps(7up, live control specifically for monome(www.monome.org) to play ableton live as well. This one, is very fun, but need specific controller like the monome.
