Whaz up?

I am looking for a gear that helps improve my voice recording. I know it can be done in your DAW but I am looking for a hardware solution since I am not good on editing in Logic.

Here is my current setup:

AT2020 Mic --> ( ??? ) --> Lexicon Omega Audio Interface --> Logic Studio 9 DAW.

So what hardware do I need?

My preferences:
- Budget less than $1k
- Prefers Rack mount type but not necessary.
- I want to achieve the vocal sound of Pantera & Metallica.

Thanks

There is no hardware solution. The only thing you may consider is to buy a dynamic mic like shure 58. Maybe you pm Blueprintstudio to know some tip to produce that kind of voice.

got software can do those kinda voice?

Thought at most its pitch correction, auto tune etc.

Perhaps can elaborate on whats to be achieved,

1) to mimic the voice of Phil or james through hardware(even though the original singing voice is no where in resemblance to the stated vocalist)

or

2) touching up vocal tracks through hardware for pitch correction purpose/compression purpose etc

If its the 1), that one quite a tough one, dont think there be much or any hardware that can do that. On the other hand, if wanna some cutesy singing purpose, yamaha has this, vocaloid

If its 2), then it be much easier, but need to run the program within the daw itself.

it's funny how some people ask questions which they think they know the answer to but suggests another alternative that doesn't become the answer. and it's even funnier how someone gehkiang tries to answer the question but it's as good as not answering and only adds on to the confusion and ultimately pointing at the obvious person who has the answer.

1) don't pm me, i'm not your personal consultant. you may engage me as one from my site and we'll talk.

you can try ask this guy. although you're 9 months too late.

I doubt those heavy metal bands record their singing through a condenser microphone. Try to get a good dynamic mic that gets the sound you want. Kongwee has suggested an sm58. You can also look at the Shure sm7b.

After that, maybe you want a more aggressive colored preamp like the api512c. That should hit your budget of about 1k.

You probably can do your compression in Logic. But you may want to explore adding a versatile hardware compressor like the Distressor in the future. It can emulate an 1176 which is legendary for its compression on hard vocals. However, before you go running out buying a hardware compressor, I suggest you understand what compression is and what it does. If not, you cannot possibly dial it in.

Just to add, Logic compressor has five mode of compression.
4 mode are base on different type of circuity with dry/mix control.
How to shape the voice you want, I have no ideal.
That why I point to blueprintstudio that handle band project quite alot.

@squarehero - Thanks. I guess I will be shifting to dynamics soon. I have heard good things about Shure sm7b. I don't own any mic preamp but I am using the lexicon's audio interface mic preamp - which i think is good enough.

@kongwee - i tried visiting blueprint studio's website but I get lost all the time

@blueprintstudios - Why not sharing your setup?

Thanks guys, so far so good.

pokoot : my site is specially designed if one gets lost in such a straightforward layout, then best "get lost" for real. makes my life really much more simple.

>Why not sharing your setup? - because you never asked.

If you can't find any answer, search bits and pieces inside Logic.
Bring up the preset channel strip for vocals.
Look at the plugins order.
Open each plugin each at take a look at all the setting.
Why the EQ are cut this way for male and different from female?
Why the compression is set this way(Hope you do read up about compression).
There some preset that has no reverb but modulation plug-in(other big topic too).
Bypass setting or play around the setting.
Also the demo project disk, do drop into your HD and open and see.
There are a lot of stories inside there.
By doing this way, you touch and feel about effect will greatly increasing.
This will uncover a fraction of your problem so far.

That why in the first place, I said there is no hardware solution.
Even in hardware, there is a several unit to contribute part of the sound.
