A band with two keyboardist

Hello to all musicians out there.

What do u guys think about a band with two keyboardist, a bassist and a drummer with NO guitarist?

personally i think this can cover lots of techno, new age, dance, trance, eurobeat such of songs. but would this set up be possible? as in will the extra keyboardist be useful?

hope to hear from u guys! =)

it's okay .... =)

as you can cover a lot of things with 2 keyboard ..

like 1 play effects ... or pad/lead ... 1 play piano or organ ...
or like another one playing string when the other one play other things ..

u can really switch around with it =)

My feeling is that only one keyboardist is needed for techno-type of music. The second keyboardist wouldn't be doing much. Even for new age music, one keyboardist may be sufficient, if that keyboardist can play 2 keyboards.

I feel 2 keyboardists are useful when both keyboard parts require signficant attention and whose parts are drastically different. If all the 2nd keyboardist playing is pads (for example), that can be easily layered with one keyboardist. However, if the 2nd keyboardist is playing strings (not pad-like, but moving strings parts including violin/cello sections etc), then it's different since it requires certain amount of attention to get the parts right.

But again, there are no hard and fast rule. You can still use 2 keyboardists for "image" purposes instead of "function" - perfectly justifiable. Today's bands go for "image" a lot. Which brings us to the next point - guitarist is quite important for "image" as well...

yar yar....guitar quite cool, especially w the drive and whatever pedal things....haha...

i say ...

the 2nd keyboardist shud be doubled as a guitarist ...

so ... got the guitar at his back then play keyboard ... the image is soo cool lor ... =P

* i want bass instead .... *

hahaha.....piano ex...maybe the keyboardist shld just use those type of keyboard which shapes like a guitar and hangs around the body....

nope! not enough! ... hahahaha

if you seen a band that the keyboardist is the bassist as well .. and see their photos, u'll understand .... it looks really cool .... but hum .. i can't remember the band name .. sorry .. hehehe

you need two keyboardists to play soul - one for hammond and/or piano, the other for everything else. e.g. Elton John, Joss Stone, Stevie Wonder. in fact many r&b acts have at least 2 keyboardists and just one guitarist.

I know of a band with a bassist who knows how to play the keyboard and the keyboardist in the same band who can play bass. But didn't hear or see 1 person play 2 instruments b4 leh.....like that the person must be "thousand hands Goddess of Mercy" then can leh....hahaha....

One keyboardist playing 2 keyboards (or more) is quite common.

Theoretically speaking, it is possible for one person to play both B3 and piano, albeit this combination is pretty hard for one person. In a band setting, both the B3 and the piano (particularly the B3) can relax on the bass since there's a bass player. If the B3 player really want to add bass (like the bass pedals), then having one player is just VERY difficult. In this case, I agree with Iansoh - 2 keyboardists are needed. But having 2 keyboards playing electro-mechanical patches (ie piano, e-piano, B3, clav, wurli etc) can be overdone if the both keyboardists have an attitude to want to show off!!!

Hi Kazuki,

personally I feel that 'keyboards' itself is the most powerful tool that has every funtions in it from bass, to guitars, to drums, to trumptes...etc..
I do not mean to be rude but honestly, keyboards may substitue to the whole band instantly, however there are plus and minuses..
ultimately, it is still your choice pal.

cheers

Two Keyboardists !

Both needs excellent co-ordination, first thing !
it doesn't matter what the heck you sing,
one should watch the timing,
I'm not writing for the sake of rhyming,
chord changes must be perfect,
and that's something one can't simply neglect,
one shouldn't be playing the fifth,
while the other got a delay during the finger shift,
layering can be done in a single keyboard,
whether it's for playing riffs or a simple chord,
two keyboards are a waste,
and definitely not to go with the modern taste,
unless you are playing the stuff by Yanni,
where everything matches well from Piano to Timpani !

I wanted to mention Zero Sequence but I realised they had a guitarist who happen to dominate the lead role... =/

While, a band with 2 keyboradists can cover symphonic metal!

well, 2 keyboardist is great. after watching Metropolis part 1 in the When Dreams and Day Reunite ( tis is the only concert that features derek sherinian and Jordan Rudess together), the 2 keyboardist thing totally blew me away. both of them trying to out solo each other

oh my gosh...I just saw a band with 3 keyboardists!!

1 on korg N264 workstation
1 on korg synth (can't see properly the model...think its Triton)
1 on roland stage piano RD 500

The one on roland stage piano is the lead keyboardist and her fingers are not well developed/injured previously

Off coz not all 3 are on all the time =)
