given the examples they have used, i have this feeling that it's going to be mainly spent on bringing in international artists. ie to attract tourists here, part of the singapore master-plan of everything being centered around economic progress and worldwide recognition. rather than being used to actually help local artists, promote local art or promoting interest to kids in schools. but what do i know.
Discuss.

What and how much should the money be spent?

help local artists = $?
promote local art = $?
promoting interest to kids in schools = $?

Well rather than discussing about amounts that should be spent here and there why not start throwing out some ideas for programmes and proposals that can be put forward.

Even 1% of the amount stated is massive boost for any programme.

If you have got an idea then get it written down, and get as much input as possible to make sure you have a solid proposal.
Then get in quick so that you have a chance of securing some of that money!

With Mosaic hailed as one of the examples its fair to say that contemporary music is a target area. They are looking to get mass appeal of course, but I think any moves to boost the profile of the arts and increase audience awareness will benefit local artists.

Wow, that's great news. Hopefully they will generate more buzz about Singapore music when they are there.

People who really give a shit apparently....

haha good one
but really, they tripled the budget for arts and no one cares about this?

and caracal, as much as i dislike their music, the government can only spend 6k on one of the few local bands that go to an established music festival?

"SINGAPORE: The Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts has outlined a raft of measures to grow the arts and culture within the community.

These include more funding to interest groups and having more arts content on free-to-air television.

These measures are expected to cost the ministry about $80 million a year on average, for the next five years.

Speaking in Parliament during the debate for the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) on Thursday, Minister Lui Tuck Yew said the steering committee looking into the Arts and Culture Strategic Review (ACSR)has put forward a vision of Singapore in 2025, as a nation of cultured and gracious people, proud of their heritage, and confident in the Singaporean identity.

The proposals include a network of heartland performing arts centres, with affordable rehearsal facilities for casual practitioners to hone their craft or to just come together for practice. "

They kinda wanna make us like operas and broadways and go to art galleries and stuff.

Caracal? I think they have to fund themselves abit longer.

No wrong ideas here though. Love their music.

As far as Im concerned, gonna watch another electrico not make it big..

haven't been here in a long time.

365mil is quite a lot of money. singapore is an awesome place with nice architecture and facilities and all that...... what's lacking is culture. and arguably culture is stimulated by music, or the arts if you take a broader perspective.

so i'm glad they tripled the budget. i just hope it's spent on the right things.

^i have a fear whittling away at the back of my head. why isn't b-quartet exploding out of our tiny island yet? no funds? personal reasons? electrico was good but they do not even touch b-quartet.
