hello all.

a newbie here (other than 4 years in a concert band) interested in playing simple rock and progressively other genres given time. Just rekindled my interest in drums after meeting some aspiring pple to form a simple for-fun kind of "band". Just went for like 2 studio practices and cant help but think that i would never improve greatly just by playing in studios once a week and thus the interest in getting a practice drum set.

I got lucky. i went to this shop and as topic, selling that for $550. inspected the kit and found a bit of rust here and there and the snare tuning thing was quite difficult to turn( pardon my noob language) i didn't have a drumstick there and couldn't realli tell the sounds... but it sounded ok with tapping from my fingers. Besides, the snare skin is a bit loose and it has some crease (flabby part) hopefully can be retified by turning the rims?

Sorry for long post. but my qn is like what are the things i need to observe for a second hand drumset? and what are the thing i should test out first before buying. etc etc. and is it realli worth it for a newbie like me.. (can play simple rhythms trying to progress)

Thanks for all responses. greatly appreciated. =)

basically check for cracks anywhere, how badly corroded the hardware is, then check wad it comes with, 5 pc + how many cymbal stands, etc. but a pearl forum at $500 seems quite reasonable

no visible cracks.. about corrosion (rust?) ... are there any specific areas to check on? if there are rust at like the stands.. i am sure those are not a problem right? maybe for asthetics. and this forum is an outdated one.. its not the 725DC which is like one generation ago.. i cant make out the date.. try googling.. maybe someone could help? it may be eons ...

thanks jeremy for your reply =)

to add on..

i live in a hdb flat. ya you know what i wanna say. would i totally regret the decision or should i get like practice pads or the rhythm travellor. erm.. i am not sure about the uses and advantages/dis of those. sigh.

considered an electronic set? better than practice pads and muffling won't be a problem if you live in an HDB flat.

hah~ considered it but the price is too steep sigh* the minimum is like 1.2 k right?

I made up my mind yday after researching/tokking to friends etc. Not going to buy the second hand drums. Maintanence and tuning would be a killer for a noob like me. Would go for a first hand drum which require little or no tuning at the begining? Would prob buy after i get better at the basics. Wun give up on acoustic sets though 1) price 2) the real thing?

Would prob get the tama stagestar seems like everyone here is like full of praise for it (begineers) maybe worth the $$

Till then..

thanks for reply ixora. from reading the forums i know ure female. way to go... think girl drummers are just cool.. ahahaha~ =P

im using pearl forum as my kit and i live in HDB flat.

even though first hand drums are new, you still need to tune them because they are made form the factory. the tone of the skin is affected during transport, moving the kit and so on. As long as the drum sounds like a drum to you, then i think it is ok then

if u do have a budget of 1.2k, you could easily buy a tama stagestar and soup it up, e.g. drum resources

having a stagestar at home, this i gotta say

pros:
its small
its affordable
i like the snare
comes with a stool

cons:
the stock cymbals are beyond sh|t
the bass pedal is very short
the stock cymbals are really sh|t
only 1 cymbal stand
the stock cymbals are ultra sh|t

hope this helps

anw with 1.2k, you could easily get the set w new cymbals

thanks for all replies. The second hand pearl forum set is sold. goodness knows who it was sold to. maybe someone in these forums.Anyway, have to test out the stagestar bass pedal after Jeremy's reply. thanks Lee for the information. Overall haven decided on what to get but J's reply is pretty enlightening. If only there is a way out of the pedal part. and any advice on begineer set of cymbals? hmm.. and i was hoping to get second hand stuff again. the 1.2 k price tag is pretty steep.

Stagestar = 630
Istanbul Mehmets = 650

slightly overbudget but its an investment. Try looking fir second hand stagestars. The pedal can be upgraded as time passes. Its not totally shit pedal. It works well... :)

1.2out. ifk can get u yamaha hip gig if i am not wrong. a better choice in the long run if u wanna bring out. if not, i tink a tama stagestar would be a gd choice. cymbals wise, i am sad to say that u missed out the sweelee sales! they had lots of gd cymbal package leftovers.

however, if u r afraid of complaints from your neighbour, u can try practice pads instead. i haven touch electronic drums for a long time. but practice pads had advance pretty fast to give the real feel. try the remo thomas lang practice pad.

PEACE

MY bet is towards PEACE drums. Its worth it. Can order custom size for ur taste too. Who else can do that? Call EZI music. Hello we all seen the roadshow right?

if u got 1.2 u can go get a pearl export already wat.Why waste time on others.for that price i would buy an export ah.

i wanna sell my b8s if u want quite new 2 months old wanna sell cos wanna buy other cymbals if anyone wants pm me and wanna sell of at 460neg.

wat are the b8's u have?cause 480's quite ex unless ur giving like 2 crashes a ride and a splash.
