Hi.

Can anyone help me??

How to have a good band with 1 guitar.
For example the line up is
guitar
bass
drum
vocal

Without the guitar, during solo always feel wired.

HOWEVER, some famous bands like Bon Jovi, Pantera, Queen, Lar En Ciel, Ozzy Osbourne can make it.

Maybe because of backstage back up, but it their past, they play with just that instruments.

If i am gonna do that, How am i gonna play live?? How to play both lead and rythm together?

Thanks.

^yeah, it'll still feel like somethings missing tho..

being a guitarist and vox of a 3 man band(i cant sing that well tho..), tone for me played a very important role when i play. i would spend alot of time adjusting my amp treble, bass, checking my distortion/overdrive and effect levels etc and rechecking my techniques. well, that still applies to everybody else who has a 2nd guitarist.

at the end of the day, being the only guitarist or not, your tone and playing will decide wether your band will sound good or bad.

my 2 cents worth.

cheers. ;)

some great bands that play live with single guitarist
1. red hot chili peppers
2. the white stripes
3. The black keys
4. wolfmother
5. Ratm/audioslave
6. Incubus

go check out their live stuff on youtube, their guitarists solo without rhythm guitars, special mention for black keys and white stripes for they consist of a guitarist/vox + drummer only.

i feel that single guitarist bands have more room for creativity than the standard 2 guitarist bands.

the more spacious feel is quite appealing really, sometimes. but if you really like the sound of a backup rhythm guitarist you should just go get one.

i saw muse live. they cheated. Even though matt is not touching his guitar, you can hear some guitar riffing going on, and not to mention the synthesisers that come out of nowhere too.

Wao..

Thanks for ALL the replies posts.

I learn a lot..

Yea i will go check out the bands..

Maybe you guys can have a band with 1 guitar only.
Cause i wanna have good players only. For the sake of rythem and get an extra member who cannot perform with the band, i rather be the only guitarist.

thanks.

anymore more bands??

Or any1 like to post the video on this forum page. The solo without backup.

you could toy with the idea of using a Boss RC-2 for looping and layering. cheating? up to your discretion =) It's prob an art too, to use it well.

using a looper is an art/skill... i applaud those who can utilise it with such a level of profficiency.
and yes... Greenday has their extra guitarist... they hide like the ninjas on stage.

hifi i think muse are not cheating..thats looper..but they just use it for certain songs..look at hysteria live...the delay effects that cover the loop hole during solo.....

Green Day does not hide their "extra" guitarist(s). Their names are Jason White and Ronnie Blake...Blake doesn't do too many songs, though.

And they do appear on stage...not hiding behind amps.

I think it's perfectly possible to sound great in a one guitar, one bass one drum band.

Really depends what kind of sound you're going for though,

your bass and drum must be very tight to sound good for starts. Also, the bass could do alot more than the typical root notes. John Mayer trio is a good example. i don't know if it's really 3 people, but you can hear certain tracks where the guitar solos without a rythm guitar. There are fills and leading tones

Well closer to home, sometimes, the unexpected band at walas-walas will play with the mentioned setup. They've done lots of classic rock stuff like war pigs, tom sawyer all with the one guitar setup. To me, it works cause ontop of being tight the drums and bass are very colourful. There are lots of ghost notes, bass chords, fills etc.

so it's really possible to sound great its just that the bass and drums have to do more

depends on the song you're playing i suppose...

if it's those flowy flowy kind where the rhythm is played prominently throughout the song and a sudden solo results in an emptiness, try playing a few open strings with distortion or get ur bassist and singers to cover up the space.

my 2bits. :P
