013s with Drop B tuning on a regular ibanez

Dear people,

I'm considering getting 013s installed on my Yamaha RGX. Of course, tuning it to E will confirm break the neck... But say if I tune it to Drop B? Any considerations, other than possible misfits with the nut?

gauge 13 strings for a C standard tuning would feel like gauge 11 strings for a E standard tuning in my opinion. That being said, I had the 25.5" scale length for a guitar in mind (eg, Ibanez RG). If that is fine with you, shouldn't be a problem. It would be good gauge for a drop tuning because the your last string would have more definition but your other strings would be stiffer. I would recommend you trying gauge 12 strings for your tuning before jumping to 13.

1 problem is that gauge 13 strings are quite limited. heck, even choosing gauge 12 strings can be quite a pain. fit the strings on your nut first before you can tell whether there is a need to trim it a little more to accommodate the bigger strings.

Btw, which guitar are you referring to? An Ibanez RG or a Yamaha RGX?

a typical strat can be equipped up to gauge 12 for standard tuning. I know this guy who plays blues really well and he uses those strings because they are significantly tighter and also better for slapping. As van_halen mentioned, harder to bend. comparable to a classical guitar.

heavy string gauges are more appropriate for down/lower tuning. try using gauge 10 strings on a fixed bridge guitar and down tune all the strings to C standard. you will notice the BIG difference.

If you want to tune it to B standard, why not just buy a 7 string set and dont use the high E string?

Unless you mean drop-B as in BF#BEG#C# and not BEADGB, cause some people say Drop B when they mean B standard

I actually wanted to get a baritone electric guitar. But with only $60 in my piggy, a new set of strings tuned down sounds much attainable.

Yeah I meant B Standard. I'm not balls enough to switch to Drop B, gotta re configure my scales playin and stuff.

I'm actually using the Yamaha RGX, but I thought saying it was a Ibanez would be easier to gauge for others.

12s are just like your acoustic guitar strings ain't it? 13s are just one step up.

gauge 13 would be suitable for B standard. however one thing to note the thicker the strings, the more expensive.

one thing to note is the scale length. I hope it's the same compared to Ibanez cos I'm not too sure about Yamaha.

last but not least, is yours a fixed bridge or FR guitar? if FR, good luck with resetting the trem angle. a lot of work involved.

Yeah scale length the same 25" -1/2. Tremolo system tightened to be immobile.

Am expecting to end up with 012s. the 011s I use now for D standard are starting to feel flimsy. And of course the sex is in the meatiness of the tone.

another thing u might wanna think about is the intonation

I recently did the same thing on my strat and the fretted note were always sharp no matter how i adjust the intonation on my bridge.
