Youth Jammerz Battle of the Bands 2014 is inaugural annual band competition for youth 23 years old and below organised by MYPART in collaboration with *SCAPE, and supported by Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS), Clubilya, CLF - Yayasan MENDAKI , Nee Soon South Zone ‘D’ Residents Committee, Greendoor Studios, and IzHatt Photos.

Competition Criteria:
The Youth Jammerz Battle of the Band 2014 is open to bands:-

  • comprising members not older than 23 years of age as on 1st March 2014.
  • represented by a minimum of 3 members and 7 members.
  • Each individual shall represent only one band. (Multiple representations shall result in disqualification.)
  • Have not been signed/ recorded by any production label, or performed/selected to perform in Baybeats.

Dates and Venue:
The competition will take place in March 2014 over three stages:-

Preliminary (Qtr Finals): Sat, 8 March 2014, 9am – 6pm (indoors). Nee Soon South CC theatrette.

Semi Finals: Sat, 15 March. 2pm – 6pm (indoors). Nee Soon South CC Theatrette.

Finals: Sun, 23 March. 4-8pm (Outdoors) *SCAPE.


Competition Criteria

Competition Schedule and Requirements

Preliminaries (Qtr Finals) Sat, 8 March 2014, 9am – 6pm (indoors). Nee Soon South CC theatrette.

Bands will be alloted performance slots 3 days before their scheduled appearance via email and sms. No swapping of slots will be entertained. Bands are required to turn up 30 minutes with all performing members with your photo ID. Each band will be given 10 minutes to perform ONE song. This includes time for sound check. Performance of an Original Composition is encouraged.

Semi-Finals Sat, 15 March. 2pm – 6pm (indoors). Nee Soon South CC Theatrette.

Twenty bands will advance to the semi-finals. All successful semi-finalists will be notified on 9th March via email and sms. If your band do not receive a reply by 10th March 3pm, it would mean that your band has not been successful. We thank you for your support and participation.

As with the preliminaries, bands will be alloted performance slots 3 days before their scheduled appearance via email and sms. No swapping of slots will be entertained. Bands are required to turn up, with photo ID, 30 minutes with all performing members. Each band will be given 10 minutes to perform ONE song. This includes time for sound check. Performance of an Original Composition is encouraged.

Semi-finalists will be given two complimentary practice hours redeemable in March-April 2014 at Lets Jam@Clubilya rehearsal studio (All band members must be present. Regular rules & regulations of usage applies).



Finals, Sun, 23 March. 4-8pm (Outdoors) *SCAPE

Eight Bands will advance to the finals at *SCAPE. All successful finalists will be notified on 16 March via email and sms. If your band do not receive a reply by 10th March 3pm, it would mean that your band has not been successful. We thank you for your support and participation.

Finalists will be alloted performance slots 3 days before their scheduled appearance via email and sms. No swapping of slots will be entertained. Bands are required to turn up, with photo ID, 30 minutes with all performing members. Each band will be given 15 minutes to perform TWO songs. At least one be an original composition involving one band member. This includes time for sound check.

Standard Setup for Preliminaries and Semi-Finals

· Full Mic up Yamaha/Pearl Drum Standard Set layout Single Bass Drum Pedal (No repositioning allowed)

· Full Mic up Amplifiers (Marshall, Vox & Peavey)

· Bass Amplifier (with DI to soundboard)

· Yamaha Keyboard with Amplifier (with DI to soundboard)

· 3 wired Vocal Microphone

· 1 Instrument microphones for additional percussions.

Cables and Personal Instruments such as Guitars and Bass will not be provided. For rental or personal instruments, please contact organisers.


Judging Criteria and Prizes

Judging will be done by an official panel of judges comprising professionals in the music and/or youth work industry. Bands will be judged based on the following criteria and weightage:-

- 30% Originality

- 10% Band Image, Appearance, Stage Presence

- 35% Sound Balancing and Song Delivery

- 10% Showmanship

- 15% X-Factor Quality

All performances will be recorded on video and will be uploaded to MYPART’s youtube channel.

The prizes for competition winners are:-

· 1st Prize – Recording of originals into a compilation album, cash prize of $1000 and a certificate of achievement and a Band Profile Photoshoot

· 2nd Prize - Recording of originals into a compilation album, cash prize of $500 and a certificate of achievement and a Band Profile Photoshoot

· 3rd Prize – Recording of originals into a compilation album, and a Band Profile Photoshoot and a certificate of achievement.

· Remaining finalists will receive a certificate of participation.

Promising Youth Talent (18 years and below): A special mention of Promising Teen Talent in the various instrument categories (e.g. PTT Lead Guitarist, Rhythm Guitarist, Bassist, Drummer, Vocals, Keyboardist).

REGISTRATION

Duly complete the registration template and email to youthjammerz@gmail.com.

Completed registration will receive an acknowledgement reply and a registration number. If a reply is not received within 24 hours, please resend application.

Upon receipt of registration number, bands are encouraged to post a band video profile to the organisers YouTube Channel. Video profiles shall include the name of band and its members as well as a short demo clip of their music (video snippets of practice, performance and audio demo are accepted). Video profile shall not exceed 3 minutes in length. In the event that registration exceed 50 bands, judges may use the video profiles to determine the 50 bands to make the preliminary rounds.

Substitution of Member

Throughout the competition, substitution may be made for a maximum of one member only. Any request for substitution must be made in writing stating reasons for substitution at least three days prior to the band’s scheduled appearance. No substitution of members is allowed without written consent from the organisers throughout the duration of the competition. Permission will be given strictly on compassionate grounds only and a case by case basis. The substituted member will not be permitted to represent the band thereafter in the competition. Organising committee is not obliged to disclose reasons for acceptance or rejection of requested substitution. Substitutions made without prior approval from the organisers will result in automatic disqualification and bands disqualified shall not be permitted to proceed in the competition.

Planned Follow Up

Beyond the competition, follow up programmes have also been planned so as to continue the engagement and grooming of these young talents.

1) Band Grooming Music Camp – A planned 3days camp open to all participants of the competition designed to give further exposure to bands on the music industry and refinement skills in stage presence.

2) Masterclass workshops – thematic workshops conducted by seasoned musicians

3) Voluntary Band mentoring under MYPART - Youth in Action programme.

Through this follow up programmes, it is hoped that the youth participants will continue to express themselves positively through music, build friendship and establish new networks in the industry. Ultimately, in line with the mission and vision of MYPART, we hope to instil in the youth the confidence of music making and artistic expression, communications as a positive experience to guide them along in their youth years.
