The 12th Soft Drum Xchange Singapore
27th September (Saturday) 2008, 12-5pm at Jurong Green CC, Indoor Hall

What is Drum Xchange?

The objective of Drum Xchange Singapore is to

- Promote exchange of drum knowledge, technique, gear talk

- Identify and nurture drum talent in Singapore

- Welcome all regardless of race, language, religion, gender, music genre and personal bias




The following things usually happen at an Xchange:


(1) Drummer Highlight/Showcase - We invite a local professional drummer/drum teacher and get him/her to share with us experiences, answer questions etc.


(2) Free Play - Everyone is welcome to sit on the drumset to play!


(3) Drum Battle - Here 2 drumsets are set up and drummers may play in tandem with each other, or "square off"


(4) Question & Answer - A more informal session where drummers can share and exchange info, tips on playing. Basically just hanging out.


(5) Gear Talk - Quite a number of drummers will bring their own gear. For the rest, a chance to try them and also get feedback on what you have been eyeballing.


(6) Cymbal/Drum Workshop - Here our resident cymbalsmith & custom drum expert - Fu Man (drum_hobbyist) will accept your request and modify your drum gear. Subject to very limited availability !! (Please ask nicely)

The committee has yet to sit down and discuss a theme for this meetup.

As always, we are also discussions to invite Professional drummers/teachers to come and share with us.

Singapore Drum Fest - our Singapore Drum Festival

In addition to announcing the 12th Xchange, I would also like to encourage all Soft and DXS drummers to come to the Singapore DrumFest 2008, this weekend at Fort Canning Hill.

I have met Mr Tan Boon several times, and I have found him deeply passionate about pushing drummers and drumming in singapore.

Amongst all the Drumfest posters and about drummers & musicians, I have not found information about him - creating a drum festival where there was none before.


Previously, I would have had to fly to US or Europe in order to catch the likes of tony royster jnr, jojo mayer, greg bissonette and other top world-class drummers.


I found shocking when I get PM that people did not even know Johnny Rabb is coming.


The line-up for this year's drum fest is just as eye popping. Enter Virgil Donati !!!


For the younger ones, do make sure you catch some of our local greats. I missed out on Lewis Pragasam when I was younger and I was at timbre the night Jeremy Monteiro (local jazz piano great, Cultural Medallion winner, professor & chair lasalle-sia college of the arts) remarked lewis as one of the best drummers in the world. And not to mention brandon khoo, whose passion for drumming burns so hard, i've witnessed how tirelessly he worked over the years to get to where he is today.



I have never spoken to tan boon about what I think about him. Even when DXS officially named drumfest as a supporter, it was negotiated by eric previously who was acting chairman then.

While some of this is about him, I believe what he is always thinking of, is bringing the best drummers to Singapore, and to take Singapore drummers and drumming to world-class level.

Lets ask ourselves if we will learn a lot by experiencing so many top notch drummers for a weekend.
