piano plug ins

anybody has recommendations for a well rounded overall piano vst that can be used across multiple genres? the only one i've tried is halion se from cubase 6 but i've never really bought a software package from other manufacturers before

What is your budget?

There are basically 3 staple models: the Steinway D, the Bosendorfer 290, and the Yamaha C7 - all grand pianos.

The best is try to get a bundle that include all three models of pianos. That will be:
1. EWQL pianos (http://www.soundsonline.com/Pianos) - most expensive of the lot
2. Ivory II (http://www.synthogy.com/products/ivorygrand.html)
3. Galaxy II (http://www.galaxypianos.com/galaxy-ii.html) - the cheapest of the 3, but still about 270 USD. This bundle does not have the Yamaha C7.

If you are tight on budget, then my suggestion is to just go for the Yamaha C7 which is an all-rounder for most genres. Each model has their distinct tone and colour. My take: Steinway is gives a warm tone but has pretty clear high registers, Bosendorfer has a powerful soundboard that gives it the grand feeling. Yamaha C7 is basically somewhere in between. A Steinway D is also pretty all-rounder.

Look at Sampletekk pianos. Also, Native Instruments New York Grand is pretty ok (they no longer bundle them together as Akoustik Piano library but are included in the Komplete Bundle).
