Pianica

Great clips! Especially like Joplin's One Note Samba. I've always played that with only piano. Pianica sounds great!

Perhaps it's time to experiment with the pianica... and the accordian as well... and various others....

Thanks for those clips!

I saw a vintage 80's yamaha one at Cash Convertor, damn tempted to get it but looks abit yucky so I didn't buy it. kinda regretting now.

Pianica/melodica has always been one of the top choices in my instrumentations. Lovely folkish sounds. If you fancy can drop by my myspace (http://www.myspace.com/s0nicbrat) to listen to Pollen, Once Again, When I Used to Be, Flights of the Plastic Bags... all has pianica in it but mine is a cheap Yamaha one...

Done some experimental compositions with it too for a contemporary dance piece choreographed by Zhang Xiao Xiong (TW/US) so can't load up on myspace :p But if you are keen enough (and patient) you can have a listen to one of the pieces HEREhttp://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=117038http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=117038 or HEREhttp://share.ovi.com/media/SonicBrat.public/SonicBrat.10609 (depending which one is smoother for you, alshit you might be interested). The piece features wind instruments such as Khaen (traditional thai/vietnamese instrument), Hulusi (Chinese gourd flute), pianica and a toy clarinet given to me by my girlfriend :) all played by me... hope you guys can tahan this one LOL

Hi sonicbrat! Haven't heard from you for a while! My favorite ambience music composer!

Interesting that you mentioned the Hulusi. As I live in Yunnan at the moment, I'm pretty familar with the Hulusi. But to play it well is not easy. Mine sitting around collecting dust at the moment. No time to fiddle around with it.

I think you should have a go at the Theremin. With the type of music you write, it will create some really great atmospheric effects.

By the way Sonicbrat, without hijacking this thread too much :), here's an interesting link to a 20th Century composer. http://www.allhands.com/main/index.html

Not for the everyday listener, but definitely interesting. I really like his dissonance writing. Not like yours, but using tonal instrument to create dissonance is definitely something in your area! What's more intersesting, he's a visual person. He writes using the piano-roll.

Hello Cheez, I was busy and also flying around performing. Just came back from Barcelona Sonar 2009. Will be in SG for a while till Aug. Thanks for listening. I own a theremin bro! Haha... I performed with it a few times in Singapore actually (once for my second live solo project, once for One Rochester Park opening and once for IMF for British Council) then now haven't used it for a few years liao.

I love dissonance, thanks for the share.

Back to Pianica... anyone knows why some refer to "pianica" and some refer to "melodica"? Is it an asian/westerner thingy? Or is it indeed two different instruments?

I should have guessed you have the theremin, and all other unusual stuff that produces ambient stuffs!

As to names, I guess we should be calling it a Melodica by right. It's first invented by Hohner who coined the name "Melodica". "Pianica" is just another name - given by Yamaha when they made theirs. They are one and the same. One of those irritating things that manufacturers change names to confuse us (like Yamaha calling "graded keys" and Roland calling "progressive keys").

Thanks pf for the links!!

it's high time we pay tribute to the pianica!

OMG ♥Tokyo Jihen♥ rocks my boat anytime! ♥ ♥ ♥

I inherited one from my aunitie when I was kid. :D

But now I don't know where it is. Maybe its thrown away when we move house. :(

I didn't know what it's called until I heard it played in bossa nova songs by Aoyagi Makoto (pianist of Mori - Japanese fusion band). I read the CD cover and found that its called the pianica. I guess they must be using a Yamaha one. And its like what Cheez said in wikipedia.

The sound is light and refreshing. I like it more when its used in bossa nova.

Musicians! Please use the pianica more. Especially in happy songs.

Thanks for the links, Sonicbrat!

I'm quite curious about Tokyo Jihen! They're a really good rock band.

Btw, since1982...with the technology and airtkt promotions nowadays, they are not so unreachable...unless they're dead like MJ before you go watch them. :D

Yeah. They must be using Yamaha ones. Especially since they are from Japan!!! Have to support local economy! :)

Hi all!! long time i neva write =)

mine is call Melodion ... lolx, basically it's better than Yamaha ones .. it's Suzuki ... bigger ... and nicer tone ... =)
