DIRTY THREE

BIOGRAPHY

The Dirty Three forged from a need to play the rent in 1993. The main concern was to try and take a band photo in a rehearsal, albeit brief. The band originally played background music in the corner of a bar, a bar probably not too dissimilar from your living room.

The band’s volume outgrew the venue, so they took on stages, stages with PA’s. There was also some problem about a stolen mop bucket.

Dirty Three’s music has been called lyrical, passionate, original, inspiring, and has earned them admiration and renown across the globe, from their home in Australia, to New Orleans to New York City and back again.

Their music has elements of folk melody, rock energy, and 20th century classical music. Their early albums offered many aggressive, ferociously emotional songs, but since their fourth album, Ocean Songs, Dirty Three have gradually shifted their focus towards a slower, arguably more melancholy, style of playing.

Dirty Three have released albums on Touch & Go Records and have toured with Sonic Youth, Pavement, Cat Power, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Devendra Banhart and Shannon Wright to name just a few.

Since 1996, Ellis has been a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Ellis and Turner have both released solo albums. In addition, Turner and White have released several EPs as The Tren Brothers, and appear as backing musicians on albums by Cat Power and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. Turner is also an internationally exhibited painter with his own work gracing the covers of all of their major albums except Sad & Dangerous. He also runs the band's own record label Anchor & Hope. In 1999, Dirty Three joined forces with Low to record an In The Fishtank session for Konkurrent records; the result has been called "some of the best material either unit has produced."

In late 2005, the band released their seventh major album, Cinder, which, though following in the spirit of Ocean Songs, drastically diverges from all of their previous works on several points. It is the first Dirty Three album to feature vocals (those of Chan Marshall aka Cat Power and Sally Timms of The Mekons), if only on two of nineteen songs. The songs are also generally much shorter and more concise than their early work, which allows for the rather large number of tracks. Perhaps most notably, instead of the usual recording live technique, they opted, for the first time in their career, to record in the studio individually.

LATEST NEWS

The Dirty Three are confirmed as the curators for the next edition of All Tomorrow's Parties saga. All Tomorrow's Parties is a music festival which takes place in the United Kingdom at Camber Sands holiday camp in East Sussex and at Minehead holiday camp in Somerset.

Named after a song by The Velvet Underground, it was founded by Barry Hogan in 1999 as an alternative to the other festivals like Reading or Glastonbury, with a tendency towards post-rock, avant-garde, and underground hip hop, along with more traditional rock fare, but presented in an environment more intimate than a giant stadium or huge country field.

The festival has its origins in the Bowlie Weekender, curated by Belle & Sebastian at the same UK venue in April 1999. Artists, usually musicians, but sometimes visual artists like Matt Groening or Vincent Gallo, are asked to curate the festival (a two-day or three-day event), inviting their favourite performers to play. The idea is that it is akin to dipping into the curator's record collection, or as Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth described it, "It's the ultimate mix tape".
