bass action trouble!

Erm, recently I mass detuned my super old bass for some cleaning of the fretboard and body etc.

When I was done, I attempted to tune it back to the standard tuning but i realised that my action had all gone wrong. Not a single note could sound and the angle of my neck seems really really awkward. It could work the previous week before I detuned it.

And yes, the bass is very old and has been left unplayed for years.

What should I do?

If it was all OK before you released the string tension, but after you reapplied string tension, the action goes all off, it means:
- you need a change of strings.
- you need a proper setup.

Bring it down to any guitar shop, get a pack of strings from them and ask them help you set up and change strings. This is the easiest and laziest way. Really tweaking the action and neck profile can take the whole day. Do inform them of your action preference.
