The inaugural Y2K14 International Live Loop Asia Festival Singapore will welcome 20 local and international live looping acts to the stage at Artistry from 25-27 September 2014.

Performances will feature music created using live looping technology – equipment that records and plays back sound, to which other sounds can be added, overlaid, deleted, filtered and mixed to form an improvisational work on the spot and using no pre-recorded material. The technique can be applied across genres, including beat-box, singer/songwriter, ambient, electronic, performance art, soundtrack and experimental. The three-day event is a unique showcase for live looping talent in Asia and embraces professionals, amateurs, songwriters, experimentalists, musicians and sound artists.

“The idea is to create an all-inclusive platform for the exploration of live looping,” says Randolf Arriola, festival director, founder of the Live Loop Asia online community and a professional musician who uses live looping technology.

“We want to create a hub where people who share a common interest in live looping can gather to exchange ideas, support each other and discover new avenues in ground-breaking musical concepts and techniques.” says Arriola. “Performances will focus not just on a single genre of music or specific tools, but will encompass a wide range of concepts, techniques, craft, art, culture and lifestyle.”

The lineup features 13 Singaporean acts, including Bani Haykel, SA (仨), Randolf Arriola and Eileen Chai, and introduces four international acts who will perform in Singapore for the first time: Mandoman Hideki from Japan, and Stylish Nonsense, Jin Matutamtada and Kasemsmai Wongchayasilpa from Thailand. Asia-based international acts include Para Sabda from the United States, Thorsten Vieth from Germany, and Wil Kolen from the Netherlands.

On Saturday 27 September from 4:00 to 6:00pm selected performers will join Randolf Arriola for a workshop which will feature a round-table discussion and demonstrations of live looping concepts, techniques and gear.

Admission to all performances and the workshop is free, although donations will be accepted and merchandise will be available for sale with all profits used to offset event costs. Both the Singapore and Bangkok Y2K14 International Live Loop Asia Festivals are not-for-profit ventures.

The festival is affiliated with the Y2K International Live Looping Festival created by Rick Walker and held annually in Santa Cruz, California. In its 14th year, Y2K has been the catalyst for international live looping festivals in 28 cities in 11 countries worldwide, including Berlin; Austin, Texas; Dubai; London; Paris; Rome; San Francisco; Seattle; and Zurich, and has received media attention from international publications such as Guitar Player Magazine, Drummer Magazine and Electronic Music Magazine. The Y2K14 International Live Loop Asia Festival Singapore is the first Y2K Live Looping Festival to be held in Asia.

“I had the honor of playing at the mother of all the Y2K Live Looping Festivals at Santa Cruz in 2007 and 2010,” says Arriola, who was a festival headliner in 2010. “It was an incredible experience to meet live loopers from around the world and exchange creative ideas and technical knowledge. Countless creative collaborations have been born from the Y2K Festival, and I wanted to bring that spirit and opportunity to live loopers in Asia.”

The festival will be held in conjunction with the inaugural Y2K14 International Live Loop Asia Festival Bangkok from 3-4 October 2014, which is organized by Jean-David Caillouët, director of performance art house and festival venue ZOO and coordinated by Randolf Arriola. The two-day Bangkok festival will feature 11 local and international performances including Nakarin Teerapanun & NaiNoi Nanon (Thailand), Before Champ (Thailand), Kasemsmai Wongchayasilpa (Thailand), Randolf Arriola (Singapore), SA (仨) (Singapore) and Pam Chung (Hong Kong).

The Y2K14 International Live Loop Asia Festivals in Singapore and Bangkok are supported by TC-Helicon, TC Electronic, Mackie, DiGiCo, Analysis Plus, Team 108 Solutions and Electronics & Engineering (E&E), in partnership with The Affiniti, Artistry and ZOO.
