Your Honest Opinion.

i was calculating it out that day after talking to nigel from drum resources a few days ago. see the thing is my set well. as much as i love it, it sucks. the hardware is all rusted none of the toms including the floor tom have any resonant skins nor resonant rims at all. the skins are old as hell.

i also went to swee lee at bras brasah and asked about the rims they told me to get in contact with the company. the thing is i think the company has closed down long ago its a maxwin by pearl set or something well thats what it says on the metal tag on the toms.

i only have hats and a ride which are both paise 101 series. so i was thinking 2 things. A) i could fix it. B) get a new one. i mean if im going to end up spending all that money with no sorta promise on how the thing is going to sound like in the end. i mean i dont even know what is the wood used. so really guys should i just give up on this set?

and i know its not the drums but the drummer. but i dont even think travis barker or cobus [haha thanks metzalx ] could do much with this set. and the sound is awful it sounds so so so far away from what i want.

so i want your honest opinion guys. frustrating feeling when you want to play and it just sounds nothing like it.:???:

it sounds like you cannot help feeling demotivated playing your currrent set.

u should take steps to move on. you ought to feel good playing and looking forward to playing your drumset, no matter if its an expensive or a cheap kit.

slowly start selling away ur stuff, save money, get a vacation job, etc.

while you're still accumulating the $$$, read up as much as u can and shortlist a few choices which is within the budget you have set for yourself

warm regards

Hmmm... I'm not sure if it's the same type of Maxwin by Pearl that my old church used to have in the mid-80's. But if it is, then I say, move on... buy new one.

The Maxwin by Pearl that I know was made of chip-board, ie, not layers of woodsheets (ie plys of wood), but wood chips (like coarse saw dust) pressed together with high-pressure and glue. You can see it from the bearing edges of your drums, is it layers like kueh lapis, or looking like chocolate chip ice-cream? This chip board is used in the cheaper range of furniture from Ikea, the kind that sags with weight and rots easily. Chip board is not made to last, nor does it produce good resonance and it warps easily; and it's much cheaper than plywood. So no matter how you tune, no matter what kind of expensive skins and hoops you put on it, it's not gonna change the sound much. So tuning it is really tough...

You don't have to buy a super expensive set and the kind of wood and number of plys is really subjective. Just make sure that the set you buy will have continued distributorship and easy-to-get parts. One note, there is a reputably-branded drum (shall remain unnamed for legal reasons) that have plastic parts to attach the drum lugs. I've tuned a few of these drums and these plastic parts break easily. Not a recommended buy...

Personally... I paid less than $1k for my 1st 9-ply maple drumset (ok that was 14 yrs ago). I heeded to Anthony Fong's good advice and saved the cash to invest in good cymbals over the years. Till now I still haven't bought my auxillary snare, cuz I keep buying cymbals!! Haha!! Ya, pointless to have a great sounding kit and jia-lat cymbals... But that's just my humble opinion...

So depending on your budget, you could get everything new, or change your cymbals 1st, then your drum...

Maxwins were actually made in Japan.

Cheap plywood, they were the Exports of that era.

People have made them work, it's not impossible.

But honestly, a kit like that, unless it has sentimental value, isn't worth a overhaul. The parts would cost more than the value of the kit! If it doesn't work for you as it is, it would be better value to put that money towards another kit.

Pearl builds a 15,000 sq. foot factory in Chiba, Japan to fill the worldwide demand for drum sets spurred by the popularity of Rock and Roll. These sets are inexpensive and bares the brand name of the distributor; such as Maxwin, CB-700, Crest, Revelle, Revere, Lyra, Majestic, Whitehall, Apollo, Toreador, Roxy, Coronet, and others...over 30 brands in all.

nah not much sentimental value except just like getting rust chips stuck in between my nails. yeah i've been looking doing alot of research on different sets today. i like the setup of pdp with more floor toms. i've checked out the peace dna as well read most of the forums and everything. someone mentioned that the toms sound quite bad and i kinda sorta agree, i play mostly symphonic black metal like inflames, cradle of filth and dimmu borgir and i want my drums to sound something like that deep-ish. i intend to work and get about 1.5~ somewhat an intermediate set. appearance wise doesnt realy matter. was considering the set found on drum resource any suggestions?

so with that cash im trying to find a way to get cymbals as well. ahhhh! metzalx gave a good suggestion on the cymbals actually Paiste PST5's. i still believe drummers dont get enough credit for what they do.

heh nazrey, i think only got the crash left. or is the ride. i know for sure the hats sold already. metzalx bought if i remember correctly.

haha and it looks more like kueh lapis to me HAHA :D

wah rance!! That means last time my church got a really bad deal Maxwin by Pearl, cuz the wood looked like one bad chocolate chip ice cream!! And they certainly didn't sound like they were made in Japan... hmmm... we first got that drum in 1985, or so... which probably explains it huh?

Anyway, am glad that we have more choices nowadays.

your right, its not the drums but the drummer, but don't forget,if the drummer does not enjoy playing on the drums, creativity and passion may hinder.hence,i suggest get a new set of cymbals, eg. istanbul samatya(which will last u a long long way) and perhaps a entry level kit(if your on a tight budget) because as drum_hobbyist would always say "its all about the tuning" :D

hope this has helped

wow. DR has one hell of a reputation with them drumkeys huh. haha its just sad when you hear the song and you try and play it and it sounds more like your playing on broken wood.

are there companies here that offer monthly payment for sets?

Haha yes I bought the hats. :) I think only got ride cymbal left. But the PST5 set itself has gotten good reviews, and the ride cymbal is the most important cymbal IMO, so if you're not planning to get an entire cymbal set yet I'd recommend getting the PST5 ride from killerbee. I just wanted hi-hats at the moment, so I bought them.

I think you would have made the correct choice in getting a new set, after reading all the chipboard thing...Chipboard kinda reminds me of the brown board we pin notes on. I remember from sec 2 design & technology that chipboard is actually made from compressing and gluing wood chips together, so its not very strong, and is actually a very cheap material. :(

DH i think you can get knighted or something. haha and Churnz im not that pretty to make it as a girl. haha.

and yeah do any companies accept monthly payment? i can pay monthly and that is not a problem at all its just more like the one shot thing. im sure im not the only one.

Swee Lee now has (finally!) 0% monthly installments payment plans by a few credit card companies.
