Your first band.

same here chester, been playing for three years but still without a band. tried auditioning but rejected not because of lack of skill but different interest.AT 14,i have no feeling what its like to be in a band although i've jam with other band a couple of time.
DO i sound pathatic??

Haha dealing with people coming late to jamming sessions, not turning up, not informing you in advance of changes, never prepare the song, never bring gear( ). Not forgetting attitude problems etc...

Haha that's what it's like some of the time. Rest of the time you get to know your friends better, learn to communicate clearly, have a sense of teamwork. For yourself, you will improve on coordination and timing.

It's ok if you're not in a band yet, cos often its more often to find somewhere where you feel comfortable in and the music direction of the band is common. I had one band in one year to play a gig, but since the drummer and I were more interested in doing something else (i.e. Jazz), we've moved on. But if you could form one, that would be best, cos it develops your personality and playing skills(like timing) which you otherwise have difficulty doing yourself properly(comeon, admit how many times you've cheated even with a metronome, heh). With a band, you cant, if you do, you just sound bad.

Hope this helps. :D

You're only 14, so i guess it's alright. I only recently started playing in a band... and i'm goin on 20 next year.

maybe it's an "era" or "generation" or even a "genre" thing

i only started how to play AFTER i was in a band..

round up a couple frens !! tt's wat u shld do !!
it doesnt matter if you/they suck at playin
u get better together, u put out a couple of good songs, u play a couple of good shows, then u break up

and u move on

bands come and go
the music never dies

i never took guitar seriously until now i have to perform in church with this grp of frens...so being i na band motivates u!

we started our band after 2 of us learnt guitar for about a year and a half, and i've stuck with that same band for for seven years already. we've had some members coming and going, and name changes, style changes.. i switched from guitar to bass, but we just love making music together. i think that's what kept us together, and we're the happiest writing or jamming and getting up on stage too.

www.leesonband.com peeps -)

when i came to perth to study, i also got a slot playing with a band, it was rather easy because the frontman was very open-minded and quite liked the freestyle vibe of jamming without being too controlling. so yeah, it's been fun all this while

1st band was with the Mat rocks from Tanglin Halt chap lau 10 storey back in 1981. First proper band was THE SHADES ...formed 1984 - and we still do the occassional gig once or twice a year.

want less probs in a band, simple, make sure the mates in ur band are ur good friends, not just easier to keep the band tight, but egos wont fly cos u just knw the other guy too well haha!oh well wads impt is tt theres friendship and respect, in the end being in the same band can nv be labled torturous! love my band, we're close friends and though we like diff music we just rem to use each other's talents. tts wads impt! i definitely agreee with the grab some close frens and jam bit!

Find good friends?

Sometimes being too good with ur friend can be bad thing too.

My drummer friend and i have known each other for abt... 10 yrs at least? When i picked up the guitar, he decided to go for the drums and together with my bro and a bassist who lived nearby, we formed a band.

Initially it was really fun, cos we are all new and just had fun jamming ard and messing up songs. The problem arised when we decided to try for gigs and stuff.

My drummer is not good. I'd rate him bad in fact. Y? Cos he can't keep a constant tempo, he can't come in at the right time, he doesn't WANT to count, can't do fills, can't play slow songs blah.. i could go on for days.

As his buddy i advised him to improve on his flaws. Being his buddy, i guess i got alittle too frank, but it was for the good of the band. However, he just shrugged it off and say he'll try to practise.

He's quite heck-care, thinks he can get by, but as we all know with trippy drums the music just wun flow as naturally. All along i was deciding to drop him from the band, but being my buddy, i just can't do it. So instead i decided to leave and do my own music.

Right now, he's getting hyped up abt music and drumming again, and wants to reform the band. And im like kinda being dragged into it, tho im really skeptical now. After a recent jam, the same story happened, and i left the jam feeling abit waste of my time.

Moral of the story: U risk ur friendship when u become too close with the one u play with. Sometimes it's better to keep a little distance to retain the "professionalism".

The killer phrase: "Come on la, we are brudders what, why dun wanna play with us?"

I started playing my instrument immediately when I joined my first band. Form by a circle of friends from Sec Sch. Doesn't last that long though, about 4mths before we choose our own path in music.

Hmm.

I had been playing acoustic for about 4 years, before i formed up my own band, but it's actually a progressive country duo.. we're both multi-instrumentalists.. which sort of developed over the 2 years we've been playing together. It's been fun, although the situation has stagnated somewhat due to studies.

But that said, I've formed up another band.. and it's cool! Looking forward to next week's jam, actually.

Was sort of jammin around with a few friends, but found out that it was kinda messy and aimless. Then we decide to form a band so that there would have a goal of some sort. Then we played covers, then got sick of it cos it lacks identity, now we are working on originals, hopefully all turns out well :D
