Optical compressor; the knobs are volume and compression. I built this from a BYOC kit- http://buildyourownclone.com/
Spraypainted it in a gold gradient, but I forgot to lacquer it, so there's a lot of chips in the paintwork.
Anyway, it's a pretty simple compressor that works decently. Compression is really a very personal thing, and I've yet to find a compressor that I really liked, but you can give this a try (at this amazingly cheap price!). This particular one works by connecting the input signal to a small light, and putting that together with a light-dependent resistor. The stronger your input signal, the higher the resistance, and the smaller the output signal. This way, it compresses your signal, reducing the difference between loud and soft. It's more gentle and natural than more hardcore compressors; could be useful if you just want a bit of control without affecting your sound too much.
