Why do musicians wear ear pieces?

i noticed that non-musicians wear them too. usually it's attached to a handphone or sometimes mp3 player.

:D

ok you also see them on news reporters. i'd guess they are told what to do through them, but at a concert how could they hear through that?!

ive never played a gig, not good enough

anyway so why do they use them. I have a metallica quote:

Kirk: I can hear nothing
James: yeah i know
kirk: no no.. i can hear nothing in my earpiece
james: so? whats the matter?

And yes, they were playing nothing else matters.

btw the quote my not be exact.

issit cuz they can hear the overall sound thru the monitors, n nt juz the sound frm where each player is standin'?

juz a guess... :)

Monitors are showing you what the audience is hearing. Floor monitors I believe they are called, are the ones that's in front and below the players. Sometimes people jump on them and whatnot but they show you what the audience are hearing. The in-ear monitors are the same except you don't have to stand at one spot to hear what the audience are hearing. Also good so that you don't just hear one instrument when you stand infront of the guitar amp for example.

these in-ear monitors are very effective. due to the way it is designed, up to 80% of the external sound can be isolated. you can clearly hear what is coming from the in-ear monitors without requiring more volume to overcome the external noise.

monitors are meant to let you listen to what you want in order to carry out your performance on stage. say, you are the singer who likes to run around on stage. the band is blasting behind you and you need to listen to the piano sound that is going to be your guide for a harmony line.

so, what you can do is to arrange with the monitor engineer to feed more piano signal into your (in-ear) monitor so that you will not go out of pitch.

Hey bud
Notice how Metallica's stage is lined with amps, all around them? Add that to the stuff coming out of the speakers pointing at the crowd, and then add in the echo in the Arena or whatever - too loud, too much. The earpieces Metallica use are linked up to the speakers, acting pretty much as head-phones. The ones Metallica use are also ear plugs. They cost well over 2 grand a piece, but in turn if Met can hear them selves in that kind of noise, they must be good!
