Who here owns a Shure SM57 or SM58 mic? How is the performance of these mics in recording and do you guys have audio samples of recordings done with this mic that i could hear?

P.S: I'm more interested in the 57 rather then the 58.

i like how the 57 is versatile with instruments...

i prefer 58 for vocals...

used both for recordin purposes and for me, i prefer 57 for instruments ,58 for vocals.

0.1 cent

57 and 58 are virtually the same. Just that 58 has the protective mesh head thing. If you take it off it will be a 57. They're very durable and pretty good and hardy for their price range. Can take high SPL levels from snare drums and make a pretty good vocal mic but if you want good quality recording they're not the way to go. I'm saying it for both because they're the same thing. best used in live performance due to their hardy build and they can take a lot of shit (A LOT of shit) and still work fine. try googling the SM57/58 durability test.

That's not true. I doubt you would be able to find a professional recording studio that doesn't have at least 5 of them and I'd bet they are used on every single session.

Michael Jackson used an SM57 for the vocals on Billie Jean.
The guitar sounds on Radiohead's OK Computer, recorded with an SM57.

Are these not good quality recording?

Remember you will need to have a good preamp and also post productions plays a big role in the overall sound. So take note.

Ok

To evident:

In your opinion what mics would you recommend using for good quality recording then?

To rest:

Thanks for the replies, i'm still interested in hearing more samples of these, SM57 or SM58.

depends on your budget. If money isn't an issue then AKG 414 would make a decent mic (for miking pianos, drum overheads and ambient mics), Heilsound PR-30 as a large diaphragm dynamic mic. for small diaphragm condensers rode NT5s are good. vocals you can use a neumann U87. note that all these mics are those that i've used before.

i believe that was an SM7....

offhand i think bono used a 57 or 58 on some releases. first deftones record chino sang through a 57.

probably 90% of any heavy guitar tones on record are 57 alone or in a combination with other mics...its a good ol standard.

www.myspace.com/avacantaffair - all distorted guitars mic'd with a single 57

I use the SM58 for my vocals.

I'm pretty satisfied... but truthfully post production plays a big part in recording sound.

If u willing to fork out abit more, do check out the SM87 as well...

It has that extra warmth and clarity than I find lacking in the SM57 and SM58..

From my experience and opinion anyway...

Yup the SM87 is a condenser mic but its designed to be rugged enough to handle for live application use as well...
