if you were to pick:
.a good quality guitar with an unknown and often disrespected brand
. a bad guitar with a respectable brand

which will you go for?

uzzo88, i am thinking if i should delete this thread? well, to make this into an intelligent discussion, why dont you state your viewpoint first?

well..i was thinking if which will make best value for money..
cuz the onli diff i see in them is brand..
i find that we often pay for the brand.
.however some people find security in paying for brand cuz of its history of quality products..
its like how a beat up fender can sustain its playability the same as a brand new unknown guitar can..
well much thot has been considered in quality of materials used but still the difference in that decal and serial number of that very product can make the price differ in the thousands..

i think this thread is perfectly okay.

well.. the part i dont get it is... respectable brand still bad guitar? kena stupid leh.. well if u ask abt brand and quality.. i will choose a branded one den a no brand but good guitar :)

ok..
hmm lets say..
brand new ibanez rg series,
brand new rg series COPY with all the same material used..wood ect
which one?

Even within the same reputable brand, eg Ibanez, people would still pay good money for a MIJ rather than a korean. Why? The promise of quality. The problem of copies is the possible lack of QC, which may create playability or build defects.

In my experience, guitars with reputable brands are of better quality than guitars of unknown/unreputable brands.

if u have a good quality guitar with XXX brand, when u wanna get a better guitar, and wanna sell it, it will not be easy to sell much less fetch a good price i think. People when buy second hand usually prefer brands.

Unless u're thinking of keeping it and mod mod mod or for the sake of keeping, go for quality. If u think u'll sell it away, go for brand.

I go for brand actually. But would like a strat neck on a RG body.

hmmm i'd consider resale value too and of coz in that case its better with a known brand. unless u're the sort to stick with the guitar for life :D

+1

For me i dont really care, its for my own playing and i rather go for something im comfortable with. Honestly i regretted buying my RG and Fender cause im not quite use to its feel.

I started off with a lespaul, might as well end with one. So i was thinking of getting a epiphone and changing its tuner and pickups. equally as good i suppose.

Unless u want this big word "GIBSON" printed on it. big deal.

i think bad guitars with good brand are like made in china epiphones, ibanezs
good guitars with bad brand is like a made in korea samick.
or those brands whose guitars are made and retailed in their own small little shops. These are decent guitar, even though they're mostly strats.

but gd brands somehow give you the extra mojo, you feel proud to own it, you'll treat it with respect to maintain it properly. You will feel like a better player. WHich you will eventually be.

Newbie, epiphone les pauls do have the big word "GIBSON" on them.

Which is like... never... lol.

But still, there are many decent guitars out there, and they're not limited to Fender, Ibanez, Gibsons and stuff.

Personally I think Epiphones with new pickups and electronics, can easily give Gibson guitars a bloody nose. But that's just me.

I think so too. Especially the elitelist series.

But nothing ever beats turning an average or otherwise deemed "shit" guitar by others, into a performing, well playing tonal monster.

Kinda like Paul Gilbert.

Anybody see his DiMarzio interview at his place? The one with the dinosaurs hanging off his ceiling. PG has all kinda brandless guitars at home lol.
