Where to setup?

This is the feedback I got from one of my students:

Student: Can you quote me for a setup and to level the frets? I have this axe.....
Malcolm: $250.

Student: Can you quote me for a setup and to level the frets? I have this axe.....
KC: $120 to $150 depending on the amount of work.

Student: Can you quote me for a setup and to level the frets? I have this axe.....
Beez: I can set it up for you but not level the frets. Set up is $40 - $60.

At the end of all the sourcing, he went to KC. Ended up paying $60 for services rendered. He didn't have to level the fret.

Well, the point here I am making is: Each of these service providers are, no doubt, good, and they will have their customers forking out their hard earned $ for a setup.

There will be ppl who will pay Malcolm's rates, that's their choice. They probably CAN afford it, no problem with that!

So, readers of this thread: Ask around, be specific and do your homework. Then DECIDE.

My 2 baht worth of input!

could always do it yourself. saves money and you can hear, see and feel how adjusting a string's action or pickup height could change the way you play and sound. i think projectguitar.com has guides on how to adjust/setup

i sent it to KC for setup today. he did a pretty darn good job. intonation is perfect now. action is amazing too! no buzzing whatsoever anymore. pickup height is just right. great job done by a nice guy :D thanks KC!

speaking bout set up, my tone knob kinda messed up, wondering if anyone of you know how much it cost to like get a tech to like replace my knob?

actually went to ranking sports today, but the guy who do repairs was like ultra busy and after waiting for half hour then just go off liao.

u can send your guitar to beez if your electronics got problem..my greco was set-up by malcolm..all who have tried it was amazed by it's low action with no fret buzz...i've also seen and felt beez's set-up..was also great...

Well, here's my experience with one of the guitar repair shops in penin. Bought pickupcovers which came with a dent. Brought back, shopkeeper said he could hammer out the dent for me. Got pickup covers back with an even bigger dent before due to the hammering. Heh no problem in the end got a 1 to 1 replacement with new pickup covers.

But what makes me wonder though, what if that was a guitar and irreversible damage done?

My point. Just go to Malcolm if it's a treasured axe and set your mind at ease.

i was just wondering how much is the standard cost for changing of input jack and "spraying" of electronics? a while back, i got charged $50 for that and a friend of mine said i got ripped off, and i feel like i did too cuz that person didnt gimme a quote before doing the service and when i asked him for the price and what he was doing he kept ignoring me... wont say who but what do u guys think?

Ive been to malcolm b4, although thats the quoted price for fret levelling + setup, he won't reccomend to level it unless u really need it. Ive had guitars setup done by diff reputable people and would have to say that he's the BEST. Pm me if u wanna know why.

Do note that im not saying` that others are not gd.

But for a gd setup at a reasonable price, try anthony@g77.
